Vs6/9 crash while editing

Post by eman911 »

I have been a user of vs6 for a long time and since July have been having a problem with the program crashing during editing. After 5 or 10 minutes of work a window pops out stating vs has encounterd a problem and needs to shut down. Surprisingly enough it does. I patched vs6 with the most recent patch, I uninstalled/reinstalled, patched again, and finally today updated to vs9, all to no avail. Any ideas?

Every time I've had crashing or other weird problems, it's been caused by an apparently corrupted video file. It took me awhile to figure that out, because the video files usually seem to play OK with Windows Media Player. But, I discovered that it only happened with particular files.

Spose I should try to recapture. Good thing I haven't reused the tapes yet.

I had this proble a while back and found that if you just move the error message out of the way you can carry on without any issue... think I posted this fact somewhere!

No need to recapture!

VideoStudio Crashing

I'm using VS8 (with all available patches) and got the same problem until today, but have just discovered that it happens when I select an MPa sound file from the samples library. The MP3 files work fine, but select an MPa file and VS crashes.

Nope, cannot ignore the error because it actually causes VS to shut down, leaving me at the desktop. Very troublesome, and very curious because it just decided to start doing this for no apparent reason after almost a year of trouble free operation.

I've just recently been having problems with VS crashing as well.

First used Ulead about a year ago (it was the trial version of whatever the current version at the time was). I was feverishly working on a project in the wee hours of the morning, when suddenly the program just quit. No warning, no error messages...it didn't even take a second to completely close. The program just disappeared and left me at the desktop. Lost about 2 hours worth of work.

I recently came back to VS from Pinnacle Studio 9 (because I use an external hard drive, and I cannot burn a DVD to save my life in Pinnacle when my video is saved on an external drive), because I knew from previous experience the Ulead was a lot more stable than Studio. I have created a couple of videos using VS9. The video files are stored on an external hard drive-tonight I went to open a project file to edit it...haven't worked on it in about a month...and when I tried to play the clip, it gave me an error saying Video Studio needed to close. I tried opening and playing several projects, and they all did this (these projects are composed of some MP3 tracks, Flash movies, and MPEG files). Restarted my computer and freed up some resources and it did the same thing.

A couple of minutes ago I was working on a project when the program just disappeared again. I've been using VS9 for a couple of months now and have never had a problem with it until now. The videos and the project files have not been altered since last time I edited them with VS, so I don't know why it closes each time I try to play it - that, however, is more understandable than the program just quitting with no warning whatsoever. This makes me very nervous!

The first thing you need to ask yourself is "What has changed on my computer since this error has crept in."

Have you installed or uninstalled anything, programs, codecs. Added new hardware, removed hardware. Has your computer suffered an unexpected crash, perhaps from a mains power failure. Something has changed, try and think what that could be.

I note that you are using MP3s -- just be aware that a number of people have experienced difficulties with some MP3 codecs (notably Lame MP3), though the problem is usually just getting them to play in VS9. At least one other person, though, has had a problem similar to yours and was also using MP3s.

Do you have any program which can convert the MP3s to .WAV format, and try that?

I have converted the audio to .WAV, and still get the same problem-I get the "needs to close" box.

It seems to be something messing up with the file or the program itself-I tried opening some other project files and I get the same error (all of these have been opened, played, and edited before without trouble). So it seems that for some reason now, after I save a project, it gives me that error.

I am going to try uninstalling the program and reinstalling it, assuming I can download it from the website (considering I left my CD at home, and I'm at college).

Thanks for the suggestion!

I think I have isolated my problem down to Flash files. I uninstalled VS, then reinstalled it, and I got the same problem - the "needs to close" dialog box. This would happen when playing the project (they were short, less than 10 seconds), whether I started from the beginning or from another spot in the project. All of these files I had trouble with had .swf files on the overlay track (not sure if the same problem happens when they're on the main track). I converted these .swf files to .avi and I have not had a problem since.

Are there any known issues with Flash movies? Hopefully this is the extent of my problem.
