video capture stuttering

Post by dmz »

Hi,
On recent captures Ive noticed that the captured video is stuttering. I have not had that problem in the past and havent changed any settings. When playing the video frame by frame I notice a slight movement for about 5 frames as it should be and then one frame seems to repeat about 5 times before it starts the slight movement again.
Im doing an analogue capture with the following settings:
PAL (25fps)
mpeg
24 bits, 720X576, 25fps
upper field first
dvd-pal 4:3
video data rate - variable 8000kbps.

I cant say when the problem started. I think it might be when I upgraded to videostudio 9. I always turn off everything when i capture (i.e. antivirus, antispam, unneeded background services and tasks etc)

Without saying that it is related to your problem, have you tried capturing at a lower bit rate e.g. 4000 or 6000 kbps? If you are capturing from an analogue source, then using 8000 kbps is really a waste of space since the very best that you can expect is only equivalent to 4000 - 6000 kbps...

Thanks. I havent tried 6000 as I read somewhere else that you should always do 8000. When I started on the caper of trying to convert vhs to dvd i found so much information and some of it seemingly conflicting that it made my head spin. When I settled on videostudio I was happy for a while as it made the job pretty easy but now i cant get past this stuttering. I dont really want to capture to avi format due to the obvious disk space issues and i dont really know whether that will really solve the problem anyway.

8000 kbps is what you use for digital capture i.e. capture of digital video. If you were capturing analogue video but using, say, a digital camera as a pass-through device and capturing to DV format, or even mpeg-2, that way, then you could use 8000 to ensure the highest quality possible -- though it is probably still overkill as any potential improvement in quality (marginal at best) would probably be far outweighed by the loss of space caused by the higher bit rate.

If you are using some other device to capture analogue, and it does not capture to DV format, then 8000 is definitely overkill.

If indeed, though, you are capturing to DV format, make sure you use Type 1 Encoder, rather than Type 2 which causes a lot of people problems, though it seems to be the default set when you install VS 9.

Thanks again Ken. The format I capture to on the capture screen says DVD. My VCR device is plugged into my video card which is one of those vivo things.
