I need basic advice. From what little I understand, the reason that my footage, once edited onto a DVD, doesn't look nearly as good as when I plug the camera straight into the TV has something to do with compression and bitrate. I don't expect a complete breakdown on video editing, but please just tell me how to make it so I am using the settings that make for the best possible product, clearest picture, I don't care how much memory it takes up, how big the files are, how much longer it takes, etc. I am going from DVD camcorder to PC to Ulead 3.5 to DVD. Thanks in advance,
Jon Schwartz

Hi Johnnie .......
First we need to know some basic information...
1. How are you capturing the video, Firewire, USB or another capture device?
2. Are you capturing digital or anologe video?
3. Are you going to edit your video? (cut, titles, transitions)
If you are just going to place your video on dvd without editing, then using MPEG to capture would be ok. However if you plan on doing any editing I would go along with the Sticky Recommendation to capture to DV-AVI type I.
Then we get into which field order to capture to. If capturing anologe, the field order should be Upper Field First or Type B. If digital video, then Lower Field First...
Sometimes it's not as easy as drag N drop or copy and paste.....

You should be able to get the exact video quality as the DVD from your camcorder...I am going from DVD camcorder to PC to Ulead 3.5 to DVD.
Under Project Settings, check the box that says Do not convert compliant MPEG files.
You should be OK if you only cut and splice. But, any transitions, filtering, cropping, etc., will requre a decode-recode cycle. In this case, the video quality will be degraded... at least during the affected part of the program. When I used a crossfade transition with MPEG files (using Video Studio, I think) the video was very blocky during the transition. Use the highest bitrate setting (8000 kbps?) for the least degradation.
