compure freezes while burning or generating movie files

usingg version 3 for quite some time in the past I had no problems burning svcd and dvd's
I have not used the program for a while and now when i goo to the final stage (burning), the program starts but freezes afer a certain percantage (+- 20 %).
As quite some new programs had been installes since the last use and that i could not find any lead for this problem, I decided to COMPLETELY REINSTALL WINDOWS XP home from scratch and install the program as one of the first new programs= same problem, program freezes the computer and only a hard reboot gets me out of the freeze.
I hope somebody can give me some leads how to correst this problem
pc= fast = 512 mb ram= large disk etc..
