Where do you want us to start guessing?

Chances are your "Video Grabber" :?: does not capture the sound. You need to capture that via your sound cards 'Line in'. Good luck, you may need it.

ok i tried that but i couldnt even hear sound when video was played back so i pluged it (the white cord) back into the grabber and the sound plays through the pc speakers.

what else could it be?

Interesting reading http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=5758

collect some relevant data of your system, set-up, source, connections etc. and come back.

Hi
Have a look at your pc’s sound volume controls. There is a recording section as well as a playback.

Make sure ‘Line-in’ is selected for ‘Recording‘ as well as Playback.

That really depends on the specifics of your system.

It sounds to me like you are capturing analogue video, from say a Hi8 camcorder, with your capture box.

If that box does a decent job of capturing to MPEG2, that would probably be the best approach for you.

Otherwise, capturing to AVI (if it's an option with your capture device) will generate much larger file sizes, and then result in longer rendering times.

Perhaps it would be best for you to try a little experimentation to see what you're happiest with.

Before you proceed further, however, and in case you haven't already done so, you should also read the announcement at the top of this forum, regarding the "Recommended Procedure". This includes useful links to update patches for VS which you might also need or benefit from.

Have fun!

Hi

If you are capturing from a digital source such as a DV Camcorder the best method is via Firewire selecting DV as the Format. The video is copied to your pc without the need to re-code with little effort on your pc.(13Gb per hour)

I am not familiar with Usb capture but assume you to be capturing an analogue source.
Whatever format you select requires some re-coding/trans-coding.

Avi seems to be the recommended format.
Raw Avi (without compression) is about 65Gb per hour.
Using Avi with compression (Huffyuv) will use about 24 Gb per hour.
Using Avi with say Microsoft video 1 will use 13 Gb per hour, this being equivalent to DV-Avi.

You could capture direct to mpeg 2 but select Pal-Dvd as the format.
It is not recommended to do a lot of editing in Mpeg 2, if this your intension then capture and edit in Avi.

Re-coding/trans-coding is very demanding on your pc. A fast pc is required to keep up with the video stream being sent to the pc.

Try a few short tests to using the different formats.
Keep your eye on the drop frame counter during capture, any dropped frames is bad.

The frame order is normally ‘lower’ for digital capture and ‘upper’ for analogue.

Create your own capture folder, enabling you to manage your files, its best when you know where they are.

Read the top post re recommended procedure and tutorials.
