Hi Jeff
You're trying to capture via firewire right?
1. What are your capture settings? DV-AVI? or are you trying to capture to DVD-Compliant(MPEG2)? System specs: RAM, Page File Size (swap file), I generally use the 1-1/2 times the amount of RAM..
I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV120, capture via firewire(iLink), to DV-AVI, Type1, and haven't experienced any problems with hangs...
2. Anything running in the background that might be conflicting or fighting for CPU during capture? Antivirus, Instant Messaging are just some of the apps that can cause problems with capture and editing....
3. If you need to do the reinstall tango...This might help..
The last time I had to do a reinstall, I started with VS8, which was an upgrade from VS5, I just put the VS5 disc in the tray and VS8 accepted it. I could have just installed VS9... You don't have to reinstall all versions along the way...
I guess that's a start, I'm not a pro or expert, just putting forth some possibilties found on the forum...Some of the pros will probably jump in soon with additional questions and answers...
**Footnote
If you'll notice several of us have our system specs listed in our sigs. This helps alot when questions are asked, they already have some info to start with. Just go to your Profile and under signature, type in your system specs, Apps, things to give them a heads up. Then select the box to always add signature, and it will be added to each of your posts...

additional information on the capture hang
my system is the abit ic7-g motherboard, 160 gig system drive, 250 gig, storage, 500 gig raid0 for video stuff, all sata, memory is 1 gig, pc3200, graphics is ati 9800 pro. no applications were running, except norton antivirus, and spyware doctor, i didn't disable these, but i could try.
i have seen a few posts pointing at 1) sp2 2) ati 3) windows installer 3.1. oh another thing, if i bring up the device control in vs9, it lists three possible choces, i have selected ms 1394 device control, if i click on device options the sony device is listed under "active device" so vs9 sees the device, it is just reluctant to actually capture anything.

The Texas Instrument single chip three-port 1394 OHCI 1.1
The motherboard uses the FireWire bus controller based on the Texas Instruments TSB43AB23 chip
and the sound blaster card, Sound Blaster® Audigy 2, has Two Integrated High Speed 1394 FireWire Ports, not sure of the chipset for this pci board, but i only use it for a firewire dvd player, but the player and power to the player were off.

device manager - set correct version
well, all is working, both the wintv and the vs9, the trick was as follows
"You will then need to go into "Device Manager" (Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/
Hardware) under "Sound Video & Game Controllers" you should see "Hauppauge WinTV 878/9 VFW Video (or) Audio driver". If you see WDM instead of VFW, you will need to double click on the "Hauppauge WinTV 878/9 WDM Video driver" click on the driver tab along the top, click "Update Driver" select "Install form list or specific location (advanced)" click next, select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" click next and select the "Hauppauge WinTV
878/9 VFW Video driver" click next & Finish. Repeat this for the other WinTV entry."
well not exactly, i don;t have vfm, but the new version posted on the web for wintv, states the version is 3.46, well when you do the update, the old version, 3.41, in my case, was still incontrol, doing the above proceedure, fixed that. you have to reboot once you do it, but then all is well. and both products can co-exist,
anyway, thanks for the suggestions, hope this helps. regards jeff
