dvr-ms

Post by rguthrie »

Any idea when editing capability of dvr-ms (Media Center 2005) will be added to VideoStudio? I would love to be able to edit my recorded TV shows directly in VideoStudio.

I would hazard a guess of no time soon! It's a proprietary Microsoft format, and I can't see Gates doing anything to help you cut out ads and other useful stuff!

InterVideo WinDVD Creator and Sonic RecordNow! can do it, so I'm sure it's possible.

Dear Ron,

sorry, you're absolutely right! I just checked my version of Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2 and it can import DVR-ms format files. Since Intervideo have taken a controlling share in Ulead, maybe the same capability will be incorporated into VS10.

Why not just use Creator then?

I find it to be a pretty good, basic video editing program in it's own right. It's DVD output quality is not quite up to Video Studio, but it has some really nice effects and transitions - better than any in VS. I don't like the way it handles titles, though.

You might use Creator to output a sample ms file to avi and then use VS to edit and output to MPEG2, and compare the resultant video quality with a straightforward rendering of the same ms file to MPEG2 in Creator.

If the ms format is roughly similar to MPEG2 in terms of compression, however, it's likely that the direct output to MPEG2 in Creator will give a better result, and it'll certainly be quicker.

Yea, I guess you're right. I'm just hooked on VS 9 though. I've been using VS since 4.0SE, so I honestly hope they incorporate it into the program, or beter yet offer it as a patch. I have a Playstation Portable (PSP) that I can watch TV shows on now thanks to Ulead giving away the MPEG4 patch and it would be great to be able to convert those shows right from VS. From what I know dvr-ms is mpeg2 with some extra stuff so it shouldn't be that difficult for the great team at Ulead to conjure up.

Thanks again,
Ron
