Cannot import DVD (home movie) VS9
I cannot import from a DVD - it's not encrypted, it's from my camcorder. I'm getting the message "Failed to open DVD Report ID: 0x800408ff(2303)". I can import using VS8, however my new camcorder uses dolby sound and I understand that VS8 does not support dolby sound. I'm not getting a response from Ulead technical help. Anyone have any ideas?

First off, can you clear up something that is confusing me? Are you using UVS 8 or UVS 9? The title mentions UVS 9, but then you refer to UVS 8 twice in your post.
You are correct, UVS 8 does not support AC3 Dolby Digital audio without an optional addon you would have to buy, which is nearly as much as an upgrade to UVS 9.
If you actually have UVS 9, then the problem with the importing may be caused by failing to finalize the DVD on the camcorder before you place it in the PC's optical drive. If you don't want to finalize the disk first, you may be able to get around the problem by connecting the camcorder using a FireWire cable and using a DV capture.

I'm using VS9, I had VS8, which is still on my machine. I was using VS8 to get around the problem, but the new camcorder uses dolby, so it's not a good work around any more. Finalizing is not my problem, it gets the same error with a finalized movie on a DVD+R, DVD-R and a non-finalized on DVD+RW (which I'm told doesn't always require finalization).
At any rate, I re-read what Heinz-oz sent, I missed the messages he was referring to below. I tried all of the options. The only one that worked was copying the .VOB file to my hard drive and renaming it to a .mpg file (had to do it in MS-DOS - explorer on windows XP-home wouldn't let me change the extension). It doesn't split it nicely into chapters like the VS8 import does, but I have sound. So at least I have a work around now.

Yes, same problem!
I'm also using VS9 and get the message after trying to import from a DVD - kopied on my VCR/DVD-burner from VHS.
Its kind of strange, I have importet files like this before on the same program/computer, but now it does not import - same message after selecting tje disc: "Failed to open DVD, Report ID: 0x800408ff (2308)"
Any idea?
:?

Nothing changed
Hi,
NO...Nothing changed - as far as I know! This was just an hour after finishing the first copy. I dont know where to find the upgrade, do you have a link?
I also have the video toolbox - it works fine importing from DVD on that program (but I have this program on another computer - SLOW)!
HELP!

Hi
I am not sure that you need the updates, read the instructions.
I applied the update just because it was there and started having problems. which is why i asked if you had installed them.
Now working without. (Don’t mend a toy till its broken.)
In your case it seems to be broken.

Another thought is Nero INCD, as far as I know this has caused problems with VS.

I experienced this....
After recording to DVD I just pressed EJECT on the DVD - it then forced the DVD-burner to make a menu! I then stuffed the DVD back in and selected "FINALIZE"... Then it worked!
So - I now know that I should not FINALIZE the DVD before I eject it, because it does not make a menu that VS9 need to play/import... Media player have the same problem!!
OK?
