VideoStudio7 problem: video won't play when I add text

Post by Kim_OK »

videostudio7 or MovieFactory 3 both will not play video when I add text/titles to video. What can I do about this? Thank you.

You could start by telling us a bit more about what you did, how and on what system.

If you rang a plumber and told him you have water in your bedroom, do you think he could tell you over the phone why?

 That's a pretty nice way of putting it. A bit acerbic, but funny nonetheless. :D

Hi Kim_OK, :)

Alright so you added a title to a video and it will not play. So with this information let's try to figure it out...
It will not play because...
1. You have not pressed the play button.
2. Your computer is not running the latest OS, with all the updates.
3. You are experiencing power surges, causing a constant reboot..
4. The type of format is not intended to be edited...

Ok any one of the above could actually be a cause for your problem, however as Heinz-oz stated above provide us with more information and we might be able to troubleshoot this, and get it to playing for you....

1. Start with the video...How did you capture your video to your computer? Firewire, USB, Import a DVD (VOB file), download it from the internet, use a third party capture device, such as a Canopus, or Haupauge..

2). What format did you capture to? MPEG, DV-AVI, DVD Compliant MPEG (MPEG2), MPEG4, Quicktime(*.mov)...

3. Are you in PAL or NTSC land? The frame rate differs between them...

4. What are the Properties of your captured video? If you would read some of the 39,915 posts you would see and know how to obtain the properties of your video clips, and how important they are to help determine what may be causing your problems... which once again is: Right Click on the clip in the timeline. Select properties..What are they? What are the properties you are capturing to? Select from the File Menu, Project Properties What do they happen to be?

So Please help us help you....

Yes, I did: 1: push play button
2: do have latest OS with updates
3: no power surges going on
4: Format can be edited--as far as I know :-)
To answer your questions(thank you for your help!):
Imported video via USB from my camera.
It's a quicktime mov. file
NTSC

5323.614 seconds
1 video/1 audio track
video track 1:
mpeg-4 compression
attributes: 24 bits 640x480
840 frames
30.014 frames/sec
duration: 5323.614 secs

sound track 1:
compression: uLaw 2:1
attributes: 16.000 KHz, 16 bits mono
447,792 samples
5323.614 secs

I really appreciate the help!

Kim,
I appolozie for my somewhat sarcastic post above, however what I and Heinz-oz were and are trying to elicite, is enough information so that we can figure out why it will not play...

I don't have VS7, however I know in VS8 you would have to purchase the MPEG4 codec, and I'm not sure it works with VS8 or 7. I know more questions....

1.Has VS7 worked with the MPEG4 codec previously?
A good recommendation for editing, adding titles is to capture to DV-AVI, however MPEG can be edited, even though it's intended for distribution. Editing MPEG's results in bad outcomes and loss of quality.

2. When you say "play" are you trying to view/play it in the preview window, project playback, or a renderd movie? Project playback is just a representation of how the clip or movie will be. It is generally choppy, and not very good quality.

3. Does your camera & computer have a firewire port?
Most companies include a USB cable to transfer video to a computer, which is dumb, they should provide a firewire cable.
Apparently you are able to capture the video, via USB (firewire is recommended for better quality).

I'm still thinking on what's up with not being able to play.. but the MPEG4 format may be the problem...

Is your VideoStudio 7 a Full version or a SE version? AFAIK, some SE versions, depending on the hardware they were bundled with, have special features / capabilities like MPEG-4 support. (Is your camera an Olympus?)

If you have Quicktime Pro, you could re-encode the videos to something like Sorenson or Cinepak, which, I think, should be supported by VideoStudio 7.

Isn't it funny,

someone comes here for help and we are the ones asking the questions :?

When and where do you press the play button? When you do, are you looking at your source clip or a new, rendered one?

After all, if I put a new CD in my DVD player and press play on my CD player, somehow, I do not get to hear the CD I inserted last.

Ok, this topic has already gone way past my knowledge so please be patient with me.
I'll try and answer all questions:
This is the first time I've tried to edit video on my computer so I can't say if it's worked before. I've only worked with still photos. When I say "Play" I'm actually talking about viewing my edits in the programs' preview window. Sorry for the confusion this caused. I have my video clips in the program and can preview them fine until I add the title to my first clip. When I try to preview this particular clip, it is not a moving video but becomes a still photo. The timer does still move as if the movie's playing but there is no fluid motion on the preview screen....it's very choppy and sporadic.
I am, like you said, using USB because it's what my camera came with and it transfers pretty quickly. I do have a firewire card sitting here in the box that I've not installed....will do that soon.
I have Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 that includes VS7 as well as some other programs...this is all the info about the program I can find. I assume it's a full version.
I don't have quicktime pro but was wondering if I needed to upgrade to this in order to have more video options. Again, this is getting above my knowledge here.
I need to add that the video that I'm working with now, along with some still photos, is off of my Kodak V550 which is not a "camcorder" but a point and shoot digital with video capabilities...I must say I am impressed with the quality of the video on this camera and if I did not want to add a title to the first clip, there would be no problems in working with it. The video clips along with the still photos have been transferred to my computer. I have imported them off of my hard drive to VS7 to create a DVD.
Thanks again guys for your patience with a rookie!

That's the way Kim_OK,

nothing wrong with being a rookie! I think we all have been there once.

You did not tell us anything about your system specs. Hence, it's hard to judge what gives. From your description of what's going on when you try to preview your title, it becomes aparent, that your system might be struggling with the task at hand.

Now, we need to know a lot more about your clip properties, your project settings, and what you are trying to do. We know already that you want to make a movie. If you ask for a sandwich at the take away, do they know exactly what you want? It's a bit like that you see. Where do you want to view your movie, PC only, DVD player etc? I know people who watch movie clips on their mobile phones  . All of these do need different settings but, in the end, they are called "movie". :?

So, please, gives us some more detail. Refer to the top "Sticky post" on this forum for some of the detail needed and where you can find it. :D

I too am thinking that my system might not be able to handle this. I have another question: just because adding the title to my video will not allow me to preview within the program, does this mean it won't work when I copy it to a dvd?
My task here is to put some vacation still photos, interspersed with some video clips onto DVD and share copies with others to watch either on their computers or dvd player. There are more stills than video.
I am in the process of going through your requested "sticky post" and making sure I'm up-to-date there....give me a few days as I will be away from computer some.
Again, thanks for the help....
Later,
Kim

Without knowing anything about your system or the source and project settings, I think I'm pretty safe in saying this: If you cannot preview it, don't bother burning it to didsk, not that it will anyway.

You need to get your settings right first, make sure your system is up to it and all relevant peripherals work as they should. After that it's smooth sailing. Skip one of them and you are bound to hit a brick wall, head on that is. :?
