CD-R QUESTION

Post by tonyjer »

Hi Everyone

This is a follow on to an earlier post about WMV files (thanks for earlier advice).

I have downloaded about 50 of these babies from the BBC Pathe News web site (nostalgic boxing footage-my sport, from the 1950s)

I know how to insert the media into the VS8 timeline but I have 2 queries:

1. Each file is about 1.5 MB equating to 1-2 minutes in duration. All other things being equal, can I burn these onto CD-R as the standard size is 700 mb/80 mins? (only ask because I have about 400 of these and the quality of the origianl newsreel is poor so I dont need to be too precious about quality)

2. Anyone know why there is no such thing as CD+R as in DVD media?

Many thanks

You should be able to directly burn the WMV files onto a CD-R with any regular CD burning software. And 400 x 1.5MB should fit. But it most-likey won't play on your stand-alone DVD player... You would have to watch the videos on your computer.

It's probably a good idea to "archive" the WMV files on a CD-R, but you may want to make some "regular" DVDs too.

If you are looking to make them playable in your set top DVD player, look into VCD or SVCD this format will play on many DVD players

And the resultant quality would be ever so "slightly" less than what you have got already. DVD Doug's suggestion makes a lot of sense. You cannot author DVD to CD-R, except in the form of mini-DVD. I have not seen a player that actually does play mini DVD. Heck, we are facing enough hurdles just getting our regularly produced DVD's to play on all players. I would not want to add another problem to the vast array. :?

At todays cost of a DVD blank, what are you trying to save? Have you compared prices for CD-R and DVD-R lately? We are talking cents, at most maybe a dollar and a bit  Not worth the trouble if you ask me.
