MF4 DVD output quality

Post by ruggy1 »

I only use good DVDs (TDK and Ricoh) but have noticed recently that some of them burnt with MF4 do not play on good quality DVD players, but they will play on cheap Chinese $40 DVD players. Is there something I can do within MF4 to combat this (probably not), or is it that even so called 'good quality' DVD blanks are not that good after all. I suspect it is the latter. If so, does anyone know the name of a decent quality DVD disk???

I don't think this has anything to do with Movie Factory. And, I doubt that your burner has anything to do with it either... I think you're on the right track, suspecting incompatibility between the media and the player.

The first thing to try is to experiment with the various formats, such as DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW. DVD-R is supposed to be the most compatible. (Some players prefer a particular format, and some players can't play burned DVDs at all!)

I don't remember where I read it... but a magazine did a test recently, and they had better results with generic DVDs than with the brand names! I have run-across a few bad DVD blanks, and I've had a really bad batch of CD blanks (75-80% bad).

And, this isn't the first time I've heard that the new-cheap DVD players are more tolerant.

It may be news to you Doug but the cheap players have over the years proven to be much more tolerant than the big brand name ones. Try to find a Sony for example that will play any region code. The first multi region coded, multi format players came from China or Taiwan.

I have just discovered something that may help people. Writing my projects at just 4x on an 8x DVD writer (Sony) rather than 8x made a difference in their readability on DVD players. Maybe the so called 8x and 16x DVD blanks should be treated with suspicion!
