system sounds gone after trial installation

Post by crl »

I have a problem with Ulead DVD PictureShow 2 (Trial version). It has stopped my xp system sounds, on checking the web this is a well known fault with this version.

I downloaded the update patch from Ulead hoping it would cure the problem but it will not install, perhaps because it’s a trial version? I get a “DPS2PatchAll5in1.exe is not a valid win32 application” error.

So is there another way to repair my system sound to the way it was?

Have you tried a system restore, since you are on XP, to a date prior to the installation of the trial?

It may also be just a coincidence that the sound failed at the time you installed the trial.

Unfortunately I could not do a system restore. The installation date required will not do a system restore, probably out of the limits of system restore time line?
The problem is a well known fault with version 2, and the worse thing about this problem is that there is no technical support, because it's a trial version!

This is a very poor service from Ulead, they are aware of the problem but will not offer support and there are many others in the same predicament as myself!

Many are having problems with the trial version of a 3 year old program? Seems kind of pointless to use software that can no longer be legally registed in the first place :?:

In any case, have you checked you audio settings and file associations in Windows XP?

Go to Control Panel and click the "Sounds And Audio Devices" to open the properties dialog. In the "Volume" tab, make sure mute is not checked. In the "Audio" tab, make sure the correct sound card is selected in the "Sound Playback" box.

Go to "My Computer" and click Tools > Folder Options and then select the "File Types" tab. Scroll through the list of "Registered File Types" and check your common audio files, i.e.; wav, mp3, wma, etc., and make sure they are associated with Windows Media Player or whatever player you normally use to listen to sounds.

Go to "System Properties" and select the Hardware tab and then "Device Manager". Expand the entry called "Sound, Video and Game Controllers". See if there are any red or yellow icons next to any of the devices on the list. If so, these would indicate a problem. Also click on the "Audio Codecs" tab and then "properties". If there are any Ulead codecs that you don't need, you can remove them here (at your own risk of course).

Lastly, you can download a free utility called "Sherlock" which will find all of your audio and video codecs and tell you if any are broken (corrupt)

http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html

Beyond that, you might be better off posting a question in the multimedia section of a computer help forum such as "Tech Support Guy".

Good luck!

You may not get technical support with trial versions but customer support will still help if they can. I used PS 2 for a while and did not have a problem with my sound. Whether or not your statement that this is "a well known problem with version 2" is true doesn't have any bearing on tis either. I can understand that support for very old trial version eventually seizes. Even tech support does not get asked many questions anymore about PS 2 either I would imagine.

Try to get Microsoft support for Win 98 or ME. :?

Just to clarify the problem:

The sound cards etc are working I am still able to play music CD's etc. If I log in as another user my system sounds work ok.

I unfortunately downloaded this program from an active ulead link which should have been disabled!
ftp://ftp2.ulead.com/pub/Trial/workshop ... _Trial.exe
DONT DOWNLOAD FROM THIS LINK!

The fault is a recognised one by Ulead, their patch information for the full version:

*Fixes the problem that causes a Windows system sound failure after installing the program.
Note: To allow this patch take effect, you have to launch the program at least once after installing the patch.

I realise it was my fault for downloading this buggy version!
I was just hoping someone had the same problem and a cure?

crl,

In that case, could it be that the PS2 installation changed your Windows sound scheme setting?

Try going to Control Panel > Sounds And Audio Devices and then click the "Sounds" tab. Is the drop-down menu empty or displaying the wrong sound scheme? If so, you can reset the Windows default scheme or a custom scheme if any are listed.

Also, in the "Program Events" window (in the same screen) you can check to make sure a speaker icon appears next to each system event that would normally trigger a sound. These can be adjusted here if necessary.

Let us know if that cured the problem.

Thanks for the reply unfortunately this was one of the first things I checked. All sound files are set up correctly. I am fairly sure that the change is made in the reg files when the program is installed.

It looks like my best option is to delete my windows user name and too recreate a new one.

Thank you anyway for your suggestions.

Hopefully you'll still have access to all your programs. If you want to try a last ditch effort, go to http://forums.techguy.org/ and post in the Multimedia and Windows XP forums. I've encounted a few difficult problems over time that the experts there were able to solve.

In any case, good luck to you!

If it was a known fault with the downloaded version, it's Uleads responsibility to fix it. Just because you didn't buy the full version and their patches do not work on trial versions does not get them out of this. Are you sure tech support did not reply to you? What about customer support? Are you sure you can receive e-mail from them? I have still cases where e-mail from Ulead does get through into my inbox while a recent reply to a technical question ende up in my "Bulk Mail" folder on Yahoo.

If it was a known fault and Ulead did provide a fix to that, they will also be able to give you a fix to do that to a trial version.

Why don't you uninstall the trial version and do a windows repair installation?

I don't think that there are other people in the same predicament as you said. After all, we are talking about a trial version. If I were to try out a software I would use the latest version. I'm sure others would do the same.

How long have you had this on your system if you can't restore to a previous date?
