DVD output size doubles for no apparent reason

Post by spurrymoses »

DVD Workshop reports the size of the impending DVD in the top-left corner. Currently, for my project, it says "3.0GB". The video I'm editing is around 2.3GB - so I can appreciate with the addition of menus etc. that's about right.

But when I go to burn the DVD, it says "Required... disk space: 6GB"

And sure enough it burns somewhere in the vicinity of 6GB. When I inspect the files I can see that it's made a copy of the entire video (2GB) somewhere in the Menu folder (I've deleted so I can't say exactly where).

How can I stop this? It seems to do it no matter what I do. I don't have anything set in the "First Play" so I can't work it out.

In any case, I'll make a plead, that if I use this as my main DVD authoring program, that they change this feature to be more transparent - I don't take the doubling in size of my DVD very lightly ;-)

How does anyone else work this out ?

You seem to be recording it to hard disk either in the form of ISO or DVD file format. It is therefore normal that it takes 6 Gb: 3 Gb for the temp files necessary during the various parts of the process and 3 Gb for the final file. It does not mean that the final result is 6 Gb, but that it requires 6 Gb of HDD space to do what you asked it to do.
