After creating my video and burn it to DVD+RW, i get the following dialogue box Erase existing data(if any) and start outputting.
if i click on yes all data is erased and my new video is burnt to the disc, if i click on no then i cannot burn anything to disc.
I thought one of the advantages of a DVD+RW disc was that you can keep adding to whats already on there. Have i got this wrong and in fact every time you right to the disc, you have to erase all existing data. In other words you must complete all the project in one go when burning to disc because you cannot add anything else later to that disc

That is my understanding, yes. After a burning session a DVD is effectively closed; it is not like a CD, to which data can be repeatedly added. (It may be different with DVD-RAM; never used these). The only advantage with RW discs is that you can do it repeatedly on the one disc.

Output in DVD-VR format instead (assuming you have a dual-format burner), it is meant to be editable and allow you to add material at a later time. For more information on limitations of this format, see this page.

Use DVD+RW to test out a video you've created, and avoid manufacturing yet another DVD+R coaster. When you're sure you'll end up with just what you want--a working DVD--you put in a (much cheaper) DVD+R and burn that baby!

I've used ONE DVD+RW to test about twenty videos so far, and still going strong. Each time I put it in the drive, I have to consent to erasing everything that's already on the disk. That question doesn't pop up when you use DVD+R.
