VS9 Video Clip Question

Post by Stobert »

I'm new to this software, this forum and video editing. Even after reading through the help sections and this forum I'm obviously still missing something basic, so please bear with me: when I import a video file into Editor and trim it to say a 14 sec. clip, I can't go back to the original file and edit a clip any longer than the original 14 seconds. I have access to the entire file, but can only work with it in 14 sec. blocks. This is the case even when I start a new project and try to work with the same original video file, it's 14 seconds, no more. When I go to the video file where it's stored on my hard drive and look at properties, it'll list the correct size (say 860 MEG), but will say duration 14 sec. Again, I'm using 14 sec. as an example, some have been locked at 1 min 23 sec, etc. What's locking me into the clip size of the first edit, and how is it affecting the original video file? Thanks.

:? Hmmmm.... Well, I've had a somewhat similar problem with DVD Workshop. But, I think I had edited the original file, and it wouldn't recognize the new longer file. ...It seemed to remember the old shorter-length. I renamed the file and re-opened it. Everything was OK.

In general, the original file shouldn't be affected at all. Many times, I've dragged the same file into the timeline multiple times, selecting different fragments to be re-combined for the edited output-file.

I've tried renaming the original file, even deleted it an re-extracted it from the DVD, still have the same problem. A few minutes ago, I reinstalled VS9, no change. Pretty frustrating... :?

Well, this morning I started from scratch and transferred a new VHS video to DVD and opened it in VS9 Editor and had the same problem (albeit with a different seemingly random video duration). This one is fixed at 10 sec., can't do anything else with it or change the duration. I'm about ready to give up. Other video files on my computer, I can manipulate at will. Makes me think the problem is with something in my VHS-to-DVD player/recorder, but I didn't have any problems with the first couple of transfers I did last week. Oh well... :cry:

Stobert,

To rule out file and/or registry corruption have you tried a clean install of VS9? Uninstalling and reinstalling through "add/remove programs" seems to leave behind some baggage that needs to be removed manually. When all else fails, the following procedure has helped quite a few users, myself included. Some of the items shown in the procedure may not turn up as you go through the list. In that case, just remove those that DO appear. Reboot and reinstall VS9 and see if the problem still exists.

1) Clean up C:\Windows\temp directory. Clean up all files in C:\Documents and
Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Temp folder. Uninstall VideoStudio 9 from
control panel Add/Remove programs.
Delete following folders
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead
VideoStudio
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc
=>C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\

Proceed to step 2, even if you can't complete step 1.

2) Delete folder {88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE} in
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (Please set "Show hidden
files and folders." in folder option in OS)

3) Please del the folder " Ulead VideoStudio 9.0" folder in C:\program
files\ulead system
4) Run Regedit from Start/Run in Windows task bar
5) Delete folder {88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE} in
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
(If you always see Ulead VideoStudio 9 file name showed in the Add/Remove
Program, please do point 5)
6) Then reinstall UVS 9 again

I did a reinstall of VS9, cleaned the registry but not as thoroughly as your recommendation. I'll try again later today and let you know how it turns out, thanks very much for the detailed reply.

Hi
The video clips you import to the timeline are merely thumbnails, links to the main file saved on your hard drive.
When you edit the video clip you do not change the main file, but create links to the file. This information is saved as part of your project as a *.vsp file.

If you click a clip in the timeline it will be highlighted with a dotted border and a yellow trim bar at either end.
Looking at the duration (top left) will show the length of the thumbnail.
If you right click the clip and select properties you will see the full duration of the main video file.

Now use the scissors to cut the clip in two, the first half of the clip will be selected. Look at the duration of the thumbnail (top left), now compare the duration with the original clip (right click and select properties). Do this for both clips.

Does that make sense

Problem Solved

Post by Stobert »

I figured out my problem, and learned a lot about how video formats and files are put together. The answer is that I was only looking at the first chapter of a file, once I extracted the chapters through Movie Wizard I can work with the individual chapter files/clips in Video Editor. Thanks to all who answered, I'm sure I'll have many more questions. 8)
