Making clip art

Post by david5121 »

Hi,
I'm using PI 10.0
I frequenty take some of my kids artwork, scan it into PI and then use the lasso selection tool to cut out the image. I then covert to object and copy to library. Then i use it in word documents or for web pages. How can I prevent the background from being part of the piece? If I am using the term correctly, I the edges of what I cut out to be transparent. I guess I could just lasso out the drawing in a much tighter way...but, how can I do this smarter?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi, I use the masking tool for that. You start with a matte in a color and transparency of your choice (select in preferences) and use the paint brush to paint things you want. You can use all the paint brush functions like size, transparency, soft edge etc. to get exactly what you want. With white color you erase the matte, with black you cover your mistakes up again. Great tool.

Even if you prefer to using the Lasso Selection Tool for making your selections, I understand that with v10 it's possible to get even "tighter" lasso results by using the "Detection Scope" a feature that I don't have in v8, and therefore can't explain how it works. I did find some info in the PI10 manual on page 133. Also, you might want to check out the Ulead PI learning center to see if there are any tutorials available.

In v8, if I want a closer selection, what I do is make my selection with the Lasso Selection tool and then edit the nodes in the Path Edit Tool. If I want my selection to be even closer, then I right-click on the selection and Shrink by a pixel or two before converting my selection to an object. That really seems to help.

HTH!
