Try to change the audio options of your stand alone player to that what you used when you created the DVD: MPEG-Audio or LPCM

My stand alones play all possible audio options automatically.
Perhaps your player has an auto setting, too ?

What type of disc did you create? A dvd, or did you just burn the .avi file to disc? Some DVD Players will play divx .avi files, so not sure what you mean by burning the .avi to disc...

If you made a DVD out of some .avi video file, and it was encoded to mpeg, then check if you used mpeg audio for an NTSC disc. Some NTSC DVD Players cannot play mpeg audio (it's not one of the NTSC Standard audio formats).
