Intermittent loss of sound after rendering AVI files

I'm using Video Studio 7 and in the past have successfully input from Digicam, editted and written to DVD. However I am plagued with an intermittent loss of sound after step 1 of the Jones procedure for writing to DVD - Share/create video file/same as project settings. I have just completed one where the AVI file of 9 GIG was split into 3 AVI files of about 3 GIG in the rendering process. The first and third have sound the second does not. In this case the origin was a VCR tape and the output will be DVD. The project settings at this stage were:

PAL 25 fps
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits 720x576 25 fps
Field order B
uncompressed
PCM 44.1 Khz 16 bit

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
