AC3 or LPCM?

Post by FlowersInTheDirt »

Hi,

I am using DVDWS ver1.2. The only two choices i see for the audio
are MPEG-2 and LPCM. At the finish stage i got a pop-up that said "MPEG audio is not a standard audio type for a NTSC DVD". So i changed it to the LPCM choice. But i see people here talking about AC3 for NTSC DVD players, but also LPCM for all DVD players. Since i do not seem to have the AC3 choice, will my LPCM DVD work? I did burn an iso to the hard drive. It yielded 3 VOB files(in addition to the menu VOB) at approximately 10minutes each. The first VOB file has yielded NO audio at all but the other two do. I am not sure why the audio is not working on the first VOB. It does work in the project. And the VOBs are from one DV-AVI(PCM audio) file that DVDWS made into 3 VOBs during the process of making the iso. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you go into the Project Settings, press Edit and choose the Compression tab. Under Audio you should be able to choose between LPCM, MPEG and Dolby Digital. The last-named is one implementation of AC-3. I assume you have downloaded and installed all the updates?

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I have the 1.2patch(dws12e_patch.exe).
And i only see the two choices: MPEG audio and LPCM audio. So i should get the "Ulead DVD Workshop 1.3 Update Patch (Released Date: 3/27/03)" and the "Ulead DVD Workshop 1.3 AC-3 Power Pack Update Patch (Released Date: 4/22/03)" patches? Are you saying the LPCM option is not going to work? Also, ive come to realize, via a few tests, that it is the "First Play" video that is causing my first VOB to have no sound. If i have no "First Play" video, then the VOB has sound. Any insight on that issue? Thank you.

NOTE: My "First Play" video is a DV-AVI that is video only, no audio in it.

I don't know what the problem is... But here's what I do know -

You are correct: ALL DVD players in the world are required to play LPCM. (48kHz 16-bit stereo)

NTSC players must also play AC3.

PAL players must play MPEG audio.

with your current project, there is no advantage to AC3. One of the advantages to AC3 is that it allows more room on the DVD for video. This means you can use higher-quality (higher bitrate) video, or squeeze more video onto a DVD. Your 30 minute DVD would not benefit from "squeezing-down" the audio.

Another advantage to AC3 is that it allows digital-surround. But DVD Workshop does not support digital-surround.

The disadvantage is that it's lossy compression.... Although I have to admit it sounds fine to me!

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I found the solution to the audio issue through a little experimentation(removing the "First Play" AVI). And i came to discover, if that "First Play" DV-AVI clip does not have audio in it, then the VOB that gets created(that has it as the first clip) will not have audio. After installing the 1.3 patch, there is now an option for me to "attach" an audio file to any of the clips(titles). So, instead of making a new "First Play" AVI that has sound. I simply opened Cool Edit and hit record and made a 5sec(length of my "First Play" AVI) "dead air" recording. And i "attached" that file to the "First Play" Title and now the VOB created has sound. Thanks for the information on AC3. That is good to know for the future, though, even after installing the 1.3 patch i STILL do not see AC3 listed as an option, only MPEG-2 and LPCM.
