Unable to switch to capture mode

When using VS8 with my Adaptec AVC-2410 PCI capture card, I get the following message.
"Unable to switch to capture mode. Check if your video capture driver is working properly"
[15200:33:6]
[15023:4:2]
"Cannot capture image"
I have uninstalled vs8 and the capture card software and reinstalled with the latest update drivers etc etc.
I am running xp sp2.

Anybody got any good ideas.

I know that VS8 will work with this capture card because I have a friend with the same set-up.
