Failed to Convert Video File Error

Post by bobg3723 »

I've been unsuccessful in using the Create Disc under the Share tab inside VideoStudeo SE 7. I get an error mesaage at the end of the rendering process. I get the same error when I tried to create an Image File. The error message reported at the conclusion of the rendering process was:

Failed to Convert Video File.
Error 80041c21
[17002 10:0]

The video file is an MPEG that I captured in VideoStudio SE 7. There were no reported issues when saving, playing or editing this MPEG within Windows Media Player or VideoStudio. I just keep getting this error when trying to burn a disc. The settings while in VideoStudio at the time of this MPEG's capture was:
Source: Hauppage WinTV Capture.
Format: DVD

The video signal source used to create the MPEG was a recording from my cableTVbox DVR played back through the s-video port. All I want to do is simply burn onto a DVD the cable progams I recorded so I can watch them later in a standalone consumer DVD player. Can someone help me?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Here is the Properties of the file I alluded to in my prior post:

File name: D:\MyVideos\Cool Video 01.MPG
File format: NTSC DVD
File size: 3,250,486 KB
Duration: 3444.978 Seconds
Video type: MPEG-2 Video, Field A
Total frames: 103.246 Frame(s)
Attributes 24 Bits, 720x480
Frame rate: 29.970 Frames/Sec
Data rate: Vaiable bit rate (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio Type: LPCM Audio
Total samples: 165,358,959 Samples
Attributes: 48000 Hz. Stereo

Can someone explain the neccesary parameters involved for burning a DVD to permit playback on standalone consumer DVD players?

Thanks in advance,

This seems somewhat curious since the error number you cite has, in the past, usually appeared when you use an AVI file with some specific CODEC like XviD or 3ivX, which might not be compatible with Ulead products. The recommended solution in such cases is to use some other converting tool like TMPGEnc to convert the AVI to MPEG2.

But in this case, you have captured as mpeg-2, so that can't be the problem (unless your DVR uses a codec which is not compatible with VS7 SE.) By the way, does your DVR have some other way of connecting to your computer, such as a Firewire port, which would be the way to get the best quality video to the computer? Does it use a hard disk or a DVD+/- R/RW disk? If the latter, you could insert the disk in a computer drive and import the video from there rather than capturing in a lower quality via S-video.

The only other thing that struck me about the file properties you cite was the Field Order A. Were those the properties of the captured video, or after you converted them to a DVD-compatible mpeg-2? Did you, for instance, use Share > Create Video File > DVD (as you should have)? Or did you go Share > Create Disc > DVD (which is not recommended, even for a simple operation like capture/burn with no edits, such as yours)?

And for that matter, does your version of VS have anything written after the SE e.g. DVD. Some versions of VS 7 SE are crippled by only being able to burn VCDs. Those able to burn DVDs are usually labelled 'SE DVD'. If in fact you have the crippled version, then all you can do is produce the DVD-compatible mpeg-2 and burn it to disc in another program such as Nero which will allow you to add a menu and chapters etc.

Finally, the recommended 'parameters' for successfully burning a DVD are set out in the sticky post at the top of this Board.

Convert error

I did some further checking with the MPEG file properties and determined that the most likely cause is that one of the files I was attempting to convert was in fact not an MPEG of NTSC-DVD format, but was actually NTSC-VCD format. That poses a new question if that is indeed what causes the conversion error. How can one convert an MPEG of NTSC-VCD format into a format compaitble for creating a disc image for DVD compatiblity or burning a a DVD directly?

Ken Berry wrote in response to my Create Disc Image error:
>the error number you cite has, in the past, usually appeared when you use an AVI file with some specific CODEC...

I'm unsure as to what codec's I have installed. I'll insvestigate that although at the moment I'm unsure of the procedure used find that out.

>does your DVR have some other way of connecting to your computer...

The Comcast tech was clueless as to whether the DVR's two available Firewire ports are enabled or not. The user manual states that these two are assigned to Audio/Video devices. If there is a Comcast subsriber in the Brooklyn Park, MN area actually using these Firewire ports, please let me know. The DVR is either a Motorola DCT6200 or 6208 (its neither apparent on the front or back side of the unit). What I can see in the back of the DVR are these three video out ports:
(a) DVI-D out connector
(b) s-video out connector.
(c) YPbPr out connectors
The DVR's YPbPr connections feed the TV signal to the HD monitor. My video graphics card's DVI-D output port feeds the Windows GUI to the HD monitor's auxillary video input. Sadly, the DVR records to an internal hard drive and the TV programs only come out the three video ports as far as I know. If I were to guess, a capture card on my computer with a DVI-D input connector could very well capture a higher quality signal. I could be wrong. Sadly, my capture card only has a s-video input port. If the DVR's two Firewire ports are indeed enabled then I can connect them to my motherboard's Firewire ports. But I'm not sure if VideoStudio 7 SE can establish the proper communications handshake though.

>The only other thing that struck me about the file properties you cite was the Field Order A. Were those the properties of the captured video,...

Yes they were the properties of the captured video. The video was captured using the VideoStudio 7 SE application. I don't remember if the capture went through the render step. I might have simply closed the program without editing it and used the new created MPEG file reloaded at a later time to try out the Share > Create Video File capability. I do know that some of my earlier captures were NTSC captured using the FORMAT: VCD, and others were captured using FORMAT: DVD. This was revealed using the PROPERTIES function. Can that be a source of my problems?

>Did you, for instance, use Share > Create Video File > DVD (as you should have)?

Yes I did use the Share>Create Video File option and waited 30 or so minutes before being notified of a file conversion error.

>does your version of VS have anything written after the SE e.g. DVD...

Yes the install disc is indeed imprinted "SE DVD".The dropdown menu File/About/ states I have version 7.01.0100. To date, I've only installed the version 7 driver upgrades; PatchForMpeg and USV7_Patch_E.

Many thanks to you and others for helping me. I'm studying the sticky notes and links and I hope to resolve these issues. Any further suggestions are always welcome and appreciated.

Bob :)

Convert Error

I get this same error now, everytime I try to create a disc. This happens in both Videostudio 8 and Moviefactory right before it should begin to burn to disc. Very annoying. I've had to just let it create the .vob source files and then use another program to burn it such as dvd copier through roxio, for example.
