Burning DVD format questions!

Post by matt_magnone »

Hi. I recently bought a DVD burner so that I could output to DVD instead of VCD so that the video will work on all DVD players. I capture video using Dazzle with the A/V cables from my Mini-DV camcorder in MPEG 1 format 340x 250 or something like that is the resolution. When I output in DVD, My video is very pixely. I know there is a problem, its just what can I change in my videomaking process to make the output quality a little better.

Thanks.

Your digital camera should have a USB-2 or Firewire port that will allow you to transfer the high-quality digital video to your computer. You may need to install the drivers/software that came with your camera.

By using the Dazzle's analog inputs, you are performing an extra digital-to-analog-to-digital conversion-cycle!

Also, DVDs are MPEG-2. Your MPEG-1 has to be converted. All MPEG compression is lossy, so you're losing quality during the re-code.

And normal DVDs are 720 x 480, but you're only feeding it 340x 250.

A gloss on Doug's opening statement: you have a mini-DV video camera though you don't give us the brand and model number. In general, though, the _primary_ way of transferring high quality video from such cameras to your computer is via Firewire, first and foremost. It is only with a handful of very recent and rather expensive cameras that you can use USB 2.0 for similar transfers. Other cameras may have USB ports: if they are USB 1.0, this is usually only for transferring still photo captures from the camera. If they have USB 2.0, many still only use these for lower quality web-camera transfers.

The problem is that no camera manufacturer of which I am aware ever includes a Firewire cable with their camera, though they usually will supply a USB cable, giving the impression that it is the USB cable which should be used for transfer. The one complication in all this is that your computer, of course, must have a Firewire port/card, though these are inexpensive and easy to install if you don't already have one... And when buying a cable, make sure that one end will fit the camera, which usually has the very small 4-pin variety of port, whereas the normal port size at the computer end will be the larger 6-pin variety.

Thanks for your help. I do need to get rid of that Dazzle. It's actually an old DISCONTINUED one! LOL It's amazing im still using it. I think its Dazzle DVC II.... My camcorder is Sharp brand and it has a firewire and a DV port. I know they make cables that are firewire to USB, which is what I would like to get instead of installing firewire ports to my PC. Any place I can get that firewire to USB cable?

Hi

Go with the firewire card, it is the best option.
