MP8 Unstable?

Absolutely! Filmstrip mode is very resource-intensive, as is waveform mode for audio, evidenced by the refresh time. Better still is filename mode. The detailed modes are not intended for general use but to go into when strictly necessary.

It's a shame about filmstrip mode - it's the one feature that caused me most of my trouble with MSP7, but with "documentary" style shooting, it's one of the most useful features to speed up editing.
It seems to crash when MSP needs to both read and write - read the video info from the AVI and write the DVP (say). Haven't played with MSP8 enough to see if it's still a problem.
There's no reason for it to be so intensive - it's only picking up a handful of frames from various points in the file. I can understand why waveform mode is so bad - it has to read every audio sample to decide on the amplitude of the pixel onscreen.

Even if it picks up only 1 pixel in 5 to draw each image in filmstrip mode, it's still ~80 kpixels per frame or about 2.5 Mpixels across the screen, and it needs the CPU + RAM to tell the graphics card which pixels to display. If you then try to pan the timeline, it has to recalculate on the fly. It can easily take a second to do so, in some cases, to recalculate 30 thumbnails.

If it wasn't for the GREAT new features of MSP8 I would probably have been back to MSP7 long ago. I try to live with the Crashing problems, as there are a number of features in the new MSP8 that's great. - The text features to name but one. Never had these with MSP 5,6,7(after SP).
It's a pitty that these crashes wastes alot of time, as the (new) backup feature doesn't do it's job.
I formatted my drive, and only installed MSP8 (XP SP2) and still experience crashes. So the dedicated system is only half from true. I realy think there is alot of problems in MSP8 that needs attention. (The Hotfix fixed a few, but not all). You can search mmpo as author and will see a list of problems and possible causes of crashes I've experienced over the last few weeks.
Praying for a SP to come out soon (as with the very dissapointing Movie Factory 5)
I'm still hooked to Ulead programmes (own a lot of them) for their ease of use, compatibility with each other and reasonable prices. Just hoping for more stability.

Err - all my crashes in filmstrip mode have been with MSP7. The project I'm working on is taking longer to complete than expected, and I'm not giong to switch 'til it's finished, but the next one will be with MSP8.mmponline wrote:If it wasn't for the GREAT new features of MSP8 I would probably have been back to MSP7 long ago.
With the signs of a SP on the horizon (that will hopefully fix some problems and crashes) you would be sad not making the change earlier. MSP8 realy has alot of great new features that makes editing so much more fun...
