MSP 8.0 demo unstable

Post by Snappermullet »

I started with MSP v6.5VE, which I then upgraded to v7.0. I have done many projects with both of these versions and it has been rock solid. I do wedding videos which generally end up around 90 min in length, so the projects are big with long captures / big file sizes.

I'm now trialing v8.0 to see if it is worth the upgrade again, and although I like the new features, video editor seems to be very unstable. After working for 10 to 15 minutes the program freezes and the microsoft message comes up, Mediostudio Pro has closed unexpectedly, sorry for the inconvenience. Luckily I have usually saved the project so when I open video editor again I only lose 10 min or so of work.

I haven't changed any part of my system and v7 is still working fine. My system is a little old:

P4 1.8 GHz
1GB RAM
40GB System HDD
120GB IDE 7200RPM 8MB Video HDD
NVIDIA FX5200 video card

I have the one side of the case open at all times with a small fan blowing onto the HDDs, so heat isn't a problem. Like I said, I have been running trouble free with earlier versions.

Has anyone else had similar stability problems with the trial version, but been OK with the full version??

Have you been using MSP7 projects for your trials? It sometimes doesn't like this.

No, I started with fresh projects.

I did import DV files that were captured with v7.0, but I assume this wouldn't be a problem?

I defragment the HDDs every week, so this shouldn't be the issue either.

In that case, I can't really help, except to say that no resident software should be working (Internet, anti-virus, spam filter, firewall etc.) Otherwise, it must be a conflict. Just one point, you haven't mentioned your OS. I have heard noises that W2k, which should have SP4 installed) is more critical than XP (preferably without SPs, SP2, in particular, being hairy for some video work).

i've worked many hours with MSP8 for the past month and i've had it crash on me 2 or 3 times a week. I've noticed that the program sometimes seems to try to do something in the background and then it freezes up, and if I try to scroll or scrub while its doing this, I get the windows error message. If i'm patient and wait about a minute while the program 'freezes', then it usually goes back to normal and I can proceed with my editing. I just make sure to save often.

I'm running msp8 on a AMD Athlong 3400+ / 2 gigs Ram/ 300 megs hard drive space / Windows XP sp2.

It's annoying at times if I have some creative ideas and I want to just keep on working through but have to wait for the computer to hopefully 'unfreeze'. I've thought about going the route learning another NLE but I hear all of the other's have their own problems and freeze/crash just the same.

Is not this "freezing" when the automatic backup is working? If you have a complex set-up (many timelines/tracks/effects etc.), this can take up to a minute or more. If you find it annoying, just switch it off, but remember to backup manually with a new name each time.
