Never ending video quest

Post by tv_news_guy »

Hello to all the wiser heads here at the web board. It's time for me to upgrade a couple of my editing stations. I already plan to continue to use raid arrays and asus motherboards. Both work very well for me. My question is: What is the best of the new video cards for MSP8? I would like to end up with one that offer dual display and video inputs and outputs on the card. Best solution would be connections for two samsung flat panels, svideo for tv monitor and dv and analog in and out. Anybody using the above I would love to hear some suggestions. In the past I've used ATI, Matox and NVIDIA.. but things change so fast that I want to make sure I get the most bang I can this time.
Many thanks in advance.

I suggest you use different hardware for each function. A simple 2-D graphics card is all you need for editing, you don't need the expensive gaming-do-all cards which generate enormous heat and are optimised for 3-D.

I use a Matrox G-550 with 32 Mb RAM to drive 2 TFT monitors and a cheapo IEEE-1394 card which, in addition to handling DV, also drives a Canopus ADVC which handles the analogue I/O to the TV monitor. Works very well and the whole lot is cheaper than a high-end do-all graphics card, which is overkill. The only proviso: I can't capture uncompressed analogue (but why should I need to when the input signal comes from VHS?)

For an AGP system I typically recommend a Matrox Parhelia or P-750 (P-750 is cheapter and best for most users). Either has great multi-monitor support, multiple overlays and a very high quality TV out mode (DVDMAX) that supports either 4:3 or 16:9.

For PCIe systems the Matrox APVe is likewise excellent. Not cheap, but one helluva video editing display card.

It has the usual Parhelia family features (multiple overlays etc.) as noted above but uses a PCIe 16x slot and can do either HDTV and SD previews. APVe also has an SD analog capture interface, but this is only active when using SD previews.
