Hi,
I just purchased VS9. I added some quicktime video into the editor and it plays fine. However, If I add a filter or try to do an overlay and play it back it just shows a couple stills from it. I just bought a new computer to run this software. AMD 64 dual core processor, 1 gig of ram etc. Any suggestions? thanks
Video will not play if I add a filter

Just to be sure: you're not judging the result by looking at the preview window are you?
If you have your preferences to Instant Playback that is just a draft showing of what will happen to help you manage the timeline.
It's use is just to remind you what transition you used, where the overlays are, how the filters work etc...
If you want to exactly see the result you have to either use the right arrow to play frame by frame and look how it works, or do a real rendering using High quality playback.
Sorry if you already know all that...
