Not clear on format choices

Post by DiscCoasterPro »

Hello everyone. This is my first time actually capturing video using the DVD Workshop 2 software. I'm capturing from miniDV camcorder, which format should I choose. I plan to burn a DVD when I'm done, I may take this captured file out to a NLEditor like VS9. Should I choose DV or DVD?

Ahh.... lol ... you can disregard :) I took a few short captures. God forbid they typed a few extra letter for us newbies .. you see DV means DV/AVI and DVD means Mpeg. Oh well. why make it simple

thanks,
dcp

I think this question has been answered a few times already. If you intend to edit the captured clips in a NLE like VS or MSP or, indeed, any of the other flavours around, it's best to stick with DV AVI. Only create your mpeg file when you are ready to burn the project to disk. Mpeg is not meant to be an editable format, it's meant for distribution on disk. It highly compresses the video to reduce the file size. Mpeg compression is not loss less. If you edit an mpeg file, it needs to be rendered again, that also means re-compressed again. Using a lossy compression on something that already lost some of its detail in a previous compression will not result in as good a quality as the original file.
