Camcorder Control Glitch in Capture Step

Post by 2Dogs »

When I hit the capture tab and go into the capture screen, my JVC GR-DV300U camcorder always starts up and advances by 23 or 24 frames, but then goes into some kind of standby mode, making a nasty buzzing sound.

I usually hit the "stop" button on the camcorder conrols below the preview screen, since it sounds like the tape may be oscillating and not doing any good to the camcorder.

Once I've done that, I can capture normally.

Any ideas on what if any settings I can alter to prevent this oscillation?

Thanks in advance!

Hi 2Dogs

Yes you are not on your own.

But I think the noise is feedback rather than the tape oscillation. The preview on the camera is stationary, still worrying all the same.
I had no problems with my old Canon MV 400 and VS 7. Control of the camcorder during capture was spot on. The camera was switched to ‘Pause’ and on the exact frame. (that is if you captured 10 seconds you got 10 seconds)
I believe some had experienced this noise during ‘pause’ so Ulead changed their control of the camera to ‘Stop’ rather than ‘Pause’ with VS 8

This introduced further problems for me, On stopping capture the camera would continue to roll until the captured frames were loaded to the timeline and library, then the camera is switched to ‘Stop’ mode, not ‘Pause’.
The consequence of switching to ‘stop’ causes a per roll on subsequent captures, Try a few 10 second captures, you will find that additional captures are a few seconds short. I know it is only a few seconds but we are talking computers, digital cameras with a time code that VS should and can control accurately, but doesn’t.

I upgraded my camera to a Panasonic NV-GS400. and still have the same problems.

Using VS 9 has not cured the problem.
I have reported this to Ulead tech Support a while back (Fri 03/09/2004) (given up hope)

I do not believe the problem is just noise, there is a problem with the way VS controls a digital camera. It may be just certain camera models that are suffering.

I have just learned to hit the ‘stop’ control, the buzzing noise reminds me to do that.

I have re-installed my ‘firewire’ driver and tried different versions.

So if you come up with a solution I would be very interested.
With Thanks

Hi Trevor,
camcorder control does seem to be a weakness in VS.

In contrast, my version of Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2 bundled with a DVD writer controls my camcorder flawlessly, and has a pretty good split by scene feature when capturing AVI.

I'm hoping that the next version of VS will combine the best of both programs. Creator 2 has some really good effects and transitions, and a very clean looking interface, although the rest of the program offers only basic control of most things.
