"Cannot create file" message

Post by Muddy »

I have no problem capturing a VHS tape or editing. I get into trouble at the Sharing stage when I am trying to create a DVD folder first before burning etc. I can convert the videos Ok but usually only get to about 90% completion when doing the Video/Audio multiplexing stage.

AAARRRGGHH!!!!!! especially after about 3 to 4 hours of processing time.

There is no error message to say what is happening. I am using VS8 OEM version with RAM 1Gb and 80Gb storage so surely memory is not a problem.

I am just starting out so any help wouyld be appreciated. :(

A common reason for faults in the burning process is following the wrong procedure. The recommended procedure is outlined in the top sticky post on this Board. To summarise, you should NOT be going straight from the project in the timeline to the burn module (Share > Create Disc > DVD) which is what it sounds as though you are doing (though creating a Video_TS folder instead of actually burning the disc). INSTEAD, you should use the preferred method which is to first produce a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 (Share > Create Video File > DVD). Once you have this file, close your current project, and then click Share > Create Disc > DVD. This will open the burning module. Insert your DVD-compatible file(s). Make sure you click on ‘Do not convert compliant mpeg-2 files’ in the little cog-wheel icon in the bottom left of the burning module screen. Add your menu, chapters etc, and then choose Video_TS folder as your 'burning' option.

If you are not using this method, then the wide experience here is that you are asking for trouble.

Hi Ken
Thanks for your response.
Yes, I am trying to "Create DVD File" as you say is the correct procedure. This trouble occurs before this file is fully created and long before I ever get to the Burning stage.

I am trying to follow the recommended procedure, at least I am unaware of any mistake I am making.

Thanks again

The problem is that your initial post said you were trying to produce a DVD folder (by which I assume you mean a Video_TS folder) and that the error occurred at the multiplexing stage (which is what the burning module does in producing the final VOB and other files that make up the structure of your DVD, for want of a more detailed explanation). If this is the case, then indeed you have followed the wrong (or not recommended) procedure and are already in the burning module, though not actually burning a disc. The Video_TS folder (or the disc image .ISO file) are not the 'DVD compatible mpeg-2' files I was talking about. Both the Video_TS folder and the ISO file are in effect the complete DVD, with all the menus, chapters and associated background audio, already done and just waiting for the final step of being burned to disc.

I am talking about the mpeg-2 file you get from Share > Create Video File and which has not yet been fed into the burning module in any way, much less having had the menus etc added. In fact, you don't even open the burning module or go anywhere near it to produce this file.

Please confirm exactly what you are doing....

Thanks again Ken
I just tried the procedure thru again twice, and I am pretty sure that I am following the recommendations, But ??

I can capture the analogue tapes OK. I can edit them to my standards.

Then I go to "SHARE" and "create a video File" OK.

But the trouble starts when I go to "create Disk". I do not try to burn straight away but go to "Create Video Folder".
(Previously I thought that this was the same as the "Create Video File" stage and this is why I was confusing!!)

But again I get to about 95% complete with the multiplexing or video/audio mxing stages and the same old message appears. "Cannot create File" I meant to write down the numbers in the dialogue box for you but I forgot. (Are they handy for you??)

It seems as if I am almost there but I must be doing something wrong. I am capturing to either MPEG or DVD formats. I have 1Gb RAm and usually 50Gb storage.

I am having the same problem as Muddy- I have read the sticky note and belive that i am following the procedure.- but obviously am missing some thing!!!

Can someone write a "Create disc for dummies" step by step--

I can create the prokject all ok and stuff - it is just when I go to Share that it all stuff up.

would be good if i could follow a step by step instruction

Great movie software but creating files, disks is make me loose what hair I have left$#@%%$^^%&^%*^&.
