Text on surface of Object

Does anyone know how to put text on the surface of an object. I want to create a rotating CD with text on it. The text has to 'stick' and rotate with the object. It's no problem putting images/video on a surface using 'texture'. I think this was asked before and the suggestion was to group the text and object but this doesn't work really well. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

just an idea,
make a circle jpg with the writing on it, and use as a texture
