Go to the vio folder under Gif Animator program folder. This is usually C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead GIF Animator then delete the uvavi.vio (You’d better to back up the file to some other folder).

I've been searching all over the net for an answer to this and your solution worked, thank you.

Did you miss the sticky at the top of this forum? The answer is right there along with replacement files for the VIO folder that may work for you.

I typed "video I/O error" into google and this thread was one of the results.

Do I really need to replace those VOI files because I did what bryave said above and it seems to work ok.

Removing the VIO folder means you cannot open any video files. If this is of no consequence to you (i.e. never plan to use GA to open a video file) then then carry on.

However, if at some point you wish to play with video file in GIF Animator, you will need it.

As per the sticked thread, newer versions of those files in the VIO folder have fixed the problem for at least two people that I know of. Hopefully this will work for you, too! :D

Ah. In that case I might do what it says in the sticky thread because knowing me I'll want to play with video files at some point.

Yey! It works. Now all I have to do is work out how to use this movie facility thingy.

EDIT: I spoke too soon - if I try to "open video" I get the message: "Unable to find any video file filters" :(

Should I start a new thread on this?

Hmm, it would seem that fix of replacing doesn't quite fix it if one wants to open videos.

Back to the old drawing board on that one!

Well, at least it doesn't crash when loading. Perhaps Ulead will fix that one someday.

Let's try this:
Replace the vio files with your originals.
This time let's try removing one vio file, starting with the uvmpeg1 file, then try GA5. If it still crashes, put the mpeg1 back and remove the uvavi file... Continue until GA works.

Not the fastest way, but it may help nailing this down.

PS If you don't have the originals, let me know, I'll get them to you.

It will run, but you can no longer open any AVI files with GIF Animator.

Glad it worked for you!

Thanks Robert.......guess I'll worry about that when I need to open an AVI file - am waiting for the CD of the software to arrive - would you recommend re-installing the program from the CD?

If it works fine otherwise, no. The crash problem is most likely due to a conflict with a codec. If it works now that you removed that uvavi.vio file, then that's the cause. That won't go away until you isolate which codec that is and remove it. Reinstalling GA 5 won't fix that.

For detailed instructions should you wish to get it all going at some point, see GIF Animator 5 crashes when loading Video I/O.

Happy animating!
