vstudio edit mystery
I'm using vstudio 7 that came with my leadtek tv200xp expert to edit out commercials from tv captures. I'm probably doing this the hard way, but I mark in the start of the tv show and then fast forward to the first commercial, then mark out. Then I save the trimmed video, mark in after the commercial, fast forward to the next, mark out, save trimmed video, etc. Then I use an mpeg joiner to create a commercial free tv show. It's hard work, and very tedious trying to get to the exact frame I need. I can't get the trim bar to stop at the exact frame; it's too sensitive, so I stop in the general area and use the ff buttons to get to where I want to go. Why is the extract video option greyed out? Is it for AVIs? Also, sometimes the trim video option doesn't work. I've been trying for two days to edit a tv show I recently recorded. I was able to edit the first commercial, but any susequent edits don't work. I've marked in and out, but trim video ignores the mark out. Is this a bug? I capture with leadtek software in mpeg 2 format and have the latest vstudio patch.

You can adjust the positions of the Mark-In and Mark-Out frame-by-frame using the arrow buttons (with the lines behind them).
Each time you press Save Trimmed Video (STV) a new video file is created that should show up in your Library display. Drop these into the timeline to join them all together.
There was a bug in VS7 that caused STV to ignore Mark-Out if Mark-In was set on the first frame of the video file. Always position it a few frames away from the origin.

Not at all sure what your doing but you seem to be doing something very strange. Why are you using an "mpeg joiner" Video studio is a video editor which cuts and joins videos (both .AVI and .MPG) you don't need any other programme. Where are you finding these "fast forward" and "fast rewind" buttons - I never found them in my copy of version 7 . ???
Since you seem to be having trouble doing it your way can I suggest you go to my website - address below - and work in accordance with the instructions on the page "Edit in Timeline" It does say it is for version 8 but I have just re-checked it using version 7 and as far as I can see the only difference is that the scissors icon (item 9) is in a slightly different place.

have you tried the short cuts to move thru either project or clip ? - press tab 1,2,or3 times until the jog bar is flashing green, then Right arrow or left arrow to move until you get to the exact frame you want. F3 or F4 to mark in or out as required. More info in the pdf help.

In UVS8 there is a multi-trim feature that allows you to select portions of that video that you wish to either keep or remove. You can use the playback and timecode controls in the multi-trim dialog to locate the exact place where the cut should take place.
Once you have the segments you want to keep, you can insert a transition if you wish, or otherwise manipulate the video before rendering it.

thanx for the replies
What I know of vstudio I got from just playing around with it. The interface is semi-intuitive. I should get the doc file. Aha, a bug in vstudio 7. I'll mark in at a few frames from the start. I wasn't dropping my capture into the time line 'cause I thought it would create only vstudio proprietary video format. This program is like an onion. Many layers. Lastly, isn't anyone else capturing tv shows? I used to edit out commercials with two VCRs. I'm not selling them or anything.

There's no such thing as "VideoStudio Propriety format" - VideoStudio produces standard video formats and has no special video format of it's own.
When you put the video in the timeline and start editing then VideoStudio will create - and you must save regularly a .vsp file. - this is NOT a video file, it is the VideoStudio Project file - this is just a small text file which keeps a record of all the bits you want to cut out and any bits you have added, when you have finished editing then you go to "Share" and "Create a Video File" which then produces a video file in whatever standard format you choose (.avi, .mpg etc. ) for use in any other viewing programme.
You can download a copy of the version 7 users manual from here :-

Did you check out the info on my website

Write down the frames
Copyright or not, editing videos for your own personal use is fine. After all, many shows cannot be purchased at all. As for editing out the commercials, I write down the frame times and use this to make the multiple videos that are linked together in the timeline. Just use the up and down arrow keys to the right of your editing display to get exactly where you want to be and write down the time. Simply click on the HH:MM:SS section of the counter and adjust with the arrows. I make videos for my product and I find this is the easiest way. Once you have all your In and Out times written down, you can then Save the trimmed areas you wrote down and glue them all together in the project timeline. Just drag and drop. It's that easy. That's what I love about this product, it's unfortunate that they don't have decent instructions to help direct new users.
If you upgrade to VideoStudio 8, it does a much better job of handling this without all the extra saved videos. It's very sweet!

regardless of whether the show can be purchased or not it is still illegal to copy another persons work without their permission. the end user agreement in VS7 and 8 makes this quite clear.
the only exemption to this is the 5 minutes of fame! if you appear on tv you are allowed to copy and back up a clip for posterity. ie you were interviewd in the street what you thouhgt of the xmas sales come early. However if it proves to be in the national interest ie you are intervied re say 9/11. that is not allowed. also is you were an actor you could not say i was in this tv program i want to back it up. it simply dont hold!

How do I put this politely?
You don't know what you're talking about.
The Supreme Court says if it's for home use only, you can tape whatever you want, and watch it anyway you want to watch it.
