PLAYING ONE CHAPTER FROM A MENU USING PLAYLIST??

Post by JohnPJenkins »

I have file that has about 30 chapters. Each chapter has been designated and appears in the column on the right . I have chapter menu buttons on a menu. I have taken a corresponding chapter and dragged it to the playlist for the particular button. For example this appears in the playlist window for the button that is designated as chapter 20:
(the chapter is :60 in length and the whole file is about 30 minutes)

Televis1960 - Chapter 20
MENU-06

Logic tells me that when I play the DVD and select that button it should play chapter 20 then return to the menu after playing the chapter. That is not what happens. It does start at chapter 20 but then keeps playing all the chapters after that before returning to the menu.

Is there a way to make it just play that chapter? Have I omitted a step?

Otherwise what is the point of having a menu with chapter buttons? :?:
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

DVD Workshop can't do what you want. :( Control doesn't return to the playlist 'till the end of the title. I've read that this is a limitation of Workshop (not the DVD standard). If that's true, there are other authoring packages that can do it.

You can split the video into 30 titles. If you want an option to play all of the titles in series, you can use another playlist (linked to a different button). But, there will be a time-gap between titles.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Just hoping someone had come up with a way to do it!

I don't think that, in practice, this is true. I know of no software that will allow a return to menu after a chapter is played and I cannot see how it could even be implemented. Furthermore, I've never seen a commercial DVD that could do it. As you say, the project must be split into titles. As I understand it, a chapter playlist function is translated into a time which effectively says "start playing the title at 01:23:45:00" (or whatever) without there being a bookmark on the video file itself which could tell the system, "Uh, uh! This is the start of the next chapter, stop and look at the playlist to see whether I have to do something." This is why I think it's impossible, whether written into the DVD standard or not; it is a de facto limitation of DVDs.

I think you are correct as I've looked at other software and haven't found any that does it. Thanks!

Hey,

Im new to DVD Workshop and the whole 'authoring process'. I could not figure how to "link" to different sections of my video(in the menu section)
So i split my video into 5 different pieces('titles') and inserted those pieces into the'Title' timeline. And then i dragged each one, into its corresponding menu button. One of the buttons('Play Video') is a link to the first piece. It is meant to play the entire video. (I have the "play after" option for each piece set to play the next title in the timeline) But are you saying, there will be some sort of time gap between each piece, because i did it this way and not the "chapters" way??? I am getting that impression from the person that gave the example of splitting the video into 30 Titles. Also, where is the "playlist"? Is that the vertical chapters thing on the right side? Have i done this wrong?
Thanks

This is no place for the long reply that your questions merit. I suggest you read the User's Manual pp 54 ff and 88 ff to obtain an idea of how WS2 works. Then run through it with your own files and you should have a much better idea of how to use it. Then, if you have any further questions, please post them here.

Interestingly, you can do exactly what you are talking about with the chapters returning back to a menu after playing in Sony's DVD Architect.

I SAY you can, because you can set it up, preview it and it works fine in preview, but the burned DVD doesn't work that way in a desktop player.

I thought it was something I was doing wrong, but obviously from this discussion it appears that that is not a DVD standard feature.

Thanks for the info!

There are packages that can do what the OP wants -- it needs to have a Chapter Playlist function.

Unfortunately, DVD WS 2.x does not have a Chapter Playlist feature -- maybe it will be added to a future release (I don't have any inside info on future releases).

I was wrong. Sony DVDA will do it. I was doing something wrong in my setup. You can do chapter playlists and end of event actions to go back to a menu.
