I can create DVDs with mpg files but when I try to use AVI files two problems arise:
1. If I try to use the Menu Wizard DVD Workshop crashes
2. If I go straight to the Finish to burn a DVD I immediately get a "burn abort" message.
I have had to resort to coverting avi files use other products first
I have all the current updates
I am using WindowsXP /2

Hi look if your system is fat32 or ntfs, if it's fat32 the conversion and the burning will stop if it is ntfs all will go ok!!!
This is not normal behaviour, but it is impossible to diagnose where your problem lies. One possibility is that your avi file requires a codec that is absent from your system, but you don't even give us a clue as to how you have generated your avi. Like going to a doctor to tell him only, "I don't feel well"! He then has to worm out of you a description of all the symptoms before he can even start to make a diagnosis.
One simple test: does it work with the sample avi files? If it does then your AVI file may not be correctly formatted or is corrupt. Another possibility is that you do not have enough space for the temp files.
If not, then it may be a conflict with some other software, but who can tell? The first thing to try, IMHO, is to do a complete uninstall, eliminating every reference to it (including folders) from your machine, including in the registry. Then re-install it and add the patches.
This is the best I can do just now.
