image quality problem when burning onto DVD

Post by Banton »

Hi, I've just got myself mediastudio pro7 and a canopus ADVC110
I'm captured footage from a 8mm Canon camcorder. When checking the DVD after burning with DVD moviefactory 2 the picture quality is very bad I've saved the file/footage as mpeg 2 frame size 720*576 the frame rate is 25
anyone any suggestions as to what is going wrong?
Thanks Dom

[rant] For Goodness' sake, can't you tell us what you are doing, instead of pretending we are clairvoyant? I'm getting really p***ed off trying to help people who won't help themselves. [/rant]

Tell us firstly what hardware you have, what OS you are using, what version of MSP7 you are using.

THEN, tell us what steps you are doing, including how you capture (settings), including to what file type. THEN tell us your exact and complete project settings in Video Editor. THEN tell us how you are generating your MPEG-2 file and with what encoder settings.

THEN, we may be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Devil I'm brand new to all this computer editing techno babble but heres what I can tell you My computer is a new Dell 5100 dimension Pent 4 160 gb 7200rpm windows XP with mediastudio pro 7 standard version
I capture anolog footage from a Canon UC8000 8mm I captured at 25 frames, DV tpye-1, the Template option I chose in video editor was DV pal 25fr, audio 48 kHz.
I used a canopus ADVC 110 converter to download my footage into the computer. I then edited, saved project 25 fr, and for compression I picked DVD pal first, burnt to disc. the footage had a lot of digital distortion, which wasn't there when I was editing, I then tried again and changed the compression to mpeg 2. burnt to disc with same results
you asked about how i generated my mpeg 2 file and with what encoder settings-I don't know what that means
please don't be angry with me devil
thanks for any help yourself and other more competent editors can give me on this problem

OK I'm slightly clearer now, but you still haven't given all the essential info.

Does your captured AVI file play correctly, before any editing? I suggest you use the Ulead DVD player to test this because it does automatic interlace correction (if you have it). Otherwise, WMP will work, but you may get "toothcombing" of fast-moving objects.

Your editing project settings should be Microsoft AVI files PAL (25 fps)
Overlay track(s):3
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

If it isn't, change it.

When you put in a captured AVI file, you should see red and green lines above the timeline tracks: these show your file is compliant with your settings. When you have finished editing, Create a new AVI file using the same settings. Does this play correctly.

Then comes the tricky part. Take this new AVI file into MF and do your DVD authoring. When you have finished, you will have to allow MF to encode your project to MPEG-2. The settings should be neither too small nor too generous. For a first try, choose the DVD-PAL default settings, for a project up to about 1 hour, but make sure that the Frame Type Setting there is Lower Field First for viewing on a TV, at 720 x 576. Once you are confident with these, you can start tweaking them to better suit your projects.

But, PLEASE (and this applies to everyone), give FULL details.

toothcombing

Post by Banton »

Hi Devil, I did what you said, it has made me realise what the actual problem is, when playing the burnt DVD there is toothcombing on any shots with the camera moving. I also noticed in movie factory, clicking the project setting s btton on bottom left of screen the settings state:
mpeg files
24 bit 720*480
29.97 fps
DVD NTSC
video data rate variable
LPCM audio

when I try to change/customise these settings- for example cahange NTSC to pal, these buttons are switched off
any advise
thanks Dom
