Several Newbie Questions About VS9

Post by spacee »

Hi There...

First of all I have to say that VS9 is a pleasure to work with, especially because it is working much faster than Adobe Premiere Pro in my case.

But there are a few things I am missing in VS9 ... I hope they are there but I just haven't discovered them yet.

I want to save my videos in MPEG1 and WMV format -- The quality options for share/save MPEG1 are good but I could use more options when it comes to WMV. In Adobe Premiere Pro there are a long list and you can customize the settings yourself if you wish. Is it possible to get a plugin or did I miss something?

When having several clips on the timeline aint it then possible to save each clip in each their video file? -- Or can you only make a full length video no matter what?

From reading on the board I found out about "Windows Media Encoder" which helped on the first problem. I am now able to customize my output as wanted.

Still need help on the 2nd. issue..

Hi spacee

Question one

From your image, by pressing ‘Customize’ you could make your own templates.

Also by using Tools—Make Movie Manager create your own templates, these will show in the create video file window above the ‘custom’ option.

Else use Windows Media Encoder, at least to reproduce the templates within VS 9.

Question two.

Use the ‘Saved Trimmed Video’ from the ‘Clip’ menu.

This will render the clip to a new file saved in your working folder, a thumbnail of the file will be placed in the library.

And as an aside
Go to File / Preferences (F6) and change ‘clip display mode’ to ‘thumbnail only’ to view all frames.

Trevor:

Thanks for your reply!

What you wrote worked perfect for the 1st issue.

What you wrote about the second issue have raised some new questions...

1. When I do "saved trimemd video" then the new file is all squeezed together. The file says it is still 352x240 but it looks more like 600x240 to me. Any idea what happend and how to correct it?

2. What will I accomplice by having all the new files saved in my working folder and having thumbnails of the file will be placed in the library. Will I be able to convert them into wmv and mpeg1 from there?

3. I have a title text added to the clips ... is it possible to get that title with me through the process as well. I plan on using it as watermark protection.

Hi

1 / Afaik the saved trimmed video makes a new file using the same properties as the original.

The file has to be saved to your hard drive, in this case VS has used the ‘working folder’ giving you no ‘save as’ options.
You should create a separate ‘working folder’ for each of your projects, that way it is easier to manage your files.

2 / A thumbnail of any newly created file in normally placed in the library, the thumbnail is merely a link to the main file. You can use it as any other clip to edit or convert at will. Deleting the thumbnail will not remove the main file unless you press ‘shift’ +’delete’ then you will be given the option.(vs9)

3 / Save trimmed video does what it says, saves a new file from an original trimmed one.

If you want to add other items, titles, audio, effects etc then the resulting clips and all the bits are rendered into one file. (rendered—made into one)

Once you have added your titles to your clip go to ‘Share—Create Video File’
Select your template and a saving location give it a name then press save (this process can take some time.)

Be aware that unlike ‘Save Trimmed Video’ this process will create a video file of the project. That is all the content your timeline.

Howdy Trevor!
Question:

If files are MPEG, wouldn't doing this degrade the clips? I am trying to create TWO titles on the Main menu from a bunch of edited MPEG clips and still images (1 for each title), but would like to do that without having to make two separate files? Is this possible? That way I wouldn't need to render the files more than I have to?

Does this make any sense? Searched around for this but couldn't find anything pertinent. Probably missed it. :( Sorry, should this be a new topic?

Thanks

if you want to split your video into two and use each seperatly, you can use the multitrim funtion - or just use the scissors on the timeline.
you now have two clips on the timeline both from the same unaltered file on your hard drive.

Delete one of the clips and use "save as" to create a project file.
now use the undelete option to restore the deleted clip.

Delete the other clip and again use save as to create another project file.

You can now open either of these project files to work with the selected part and do your editing etc. this way you have not degraded or rendered the original and so have no loss of quality.

Thank you Sjj1805! Could I please clarify this? I have recorded two shows in one capture mpeg file. Since they ran concurrently I didn't have time to stop and restart the capture. I have edited the file using multitrim & scissors, etc. and want to create two thumbnails (motion video type) on the MAIN menu which represents each show. Are these considered Titles?

But when I go to share and create disk I noticed that there is only one thumbnail representing both shows.

Isn't this possible within the same (existing) project?

I swear I read a thread on a couple of ways to do that but can't find it. :(

Yes...

Complete all of your editing on the first saved project and save the project.
Open the second project, do all your editing on that and again save that project.

You now have two edited and saved projects, but you still only have the original MPEG or AVI file.

Now delete everything from the main timeline.

Go to the share tab and select Create Disk.
Select Add Video Studio Project and select both of your saved projects.
You now have two thumbnails shown under number of Titles. Treat them as you would if they were in fact two seperate video files.

You can create chapters for each, There will be seperate Title Thumbnails on a main menu, plus if you opted to have chapters, each of the two titles will have its own chapter menu(s).

God Bless sjj1805!! Gettin closer to where I can understand. And this appears to accomplish what I need. HOWEVER, it seems almost everyone up here encourages you NOT to burn from project files but only after rendering the saved edited project into a file FIRST. Unless I'm missing something of which you are telling me to do? Here's exactly the situation:

Captured 2 shows into 1 mpeg file. Shows ran concurrent so didn't have time to stop/save and start a second file. Opened and edited file with both shows in VS9. Edited via multitrim & scissors etc. to get a bunch of clips and 2 still pictures (for beginning of each show) for show#1 and show#2. What I read from so many up here is that the only way (other than what you have described above) to make 2 motion menu thumbnails (1 for each show) in main menu is to create two separate mpeg files. But wouldn't this mean I'd have to render each show separately, and then have to render again to burn the DVD? Or since the 2 shows are already rendered into 2 files, it doesn't actually render again in order to burn DVD? Again, my concern is to avoid - as much as possible - degradation of the mpeg file to final project (the 2 shows on 1 DVD with 2 motion menus on main menu).

It would seem the way you described above, using 2 projects would accomplish this, but doesn't this mean I can't create the file first?

You know, the more I try to learn this technology, the more RESPECT i have for all of you guys up here trying to help us. :)

P.S. Oh, and since I've also learned that VS9 - no matter what, defaults to the beginning of the first clip for the 30 second motion menus, it would seem that the ONLY way to accomplish what I need to do is to create the 2 shows in separate files anyway. ???? Otherwise wouldn't the two motion menus be exactly the same for each show? Would that be accurate?

You can do it this way.
Render your two seperate projects as seperate MPEG Files.

Now when you choose "Create Disc" Select "Add Video" and import both of your rendered MPEG Files.

Below the thumbnails is an icon resembling a cog, click this and make sure that the box "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" has a tick.
This will prevent your files being rendered a second time.

I would recommend this as the best choice.

My original answer was to address your question:-
I am trying to create TWO titles on the Main menu from a bunch of edited MPEG clips and still images (1 for each title), but would like to do that without having to make two separate files? Is this possible?
Regards and hope I haven't confused you.
