Just getting my feet wet with MSP 8.
Not much info in the manual about using Smart Proxy.
I have ordered the codec that Terry recommended in another forum. He talks about being able to choose between several codecs. The read me file took me to preferences - smart proxy but the only codec that seemed to be available was mpeg.
Am I in the wrong place to change codecs?
Were do I put my new Picvideo codec when I get it?
Thank you!

In the Preferences/Smart Proxy template list you should find presets for DV (4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios) and for VCD & DVD, both of which are MPEG profiles.
To set up your own *.avi codec for proxy use select one of the DV templates then modify it by opening the Options list. Once PICVideo is selected the aspect ratio selection is according to the source and this will be ghosted. You can also set up a custom user resolution etc.
Now name and save the new Template by clicking Templates/Add Template.
I'd set up PICVideo (or whatever) for resolutions that are integer divisions of the source sizes you're using. Ex: 960x540, 720x540 and 640x360 for 1920x1080i, 1440x1080i (anamorphic) and 1280x720p respectively.
Now set up matching project templates and you're all set.
Poof...

Thanks Terry
I think I'll be able to switch codec's when it comes in. But I believe that I am having some problem using the proxy files.
I created the proxy files... I think. At least the little brown bar appeared at the bottom with a cancel button in the middle and a window. Now I am not sure that I am using them because my preview window performance is very poor, the timeline is slow to redraw and getting into play takes a lot of time as well. Am I missing something?
I have a P4 3.0ghz. 1gb RAM. SATA C:drive and 2 SATA HD's in a RAID 0.
I expected better performance than I am getting.
