VideoStudio 9 Fails to Open After Months of Trouble Free Use

Post by lando622 »

After several months of hassle-free usage (but at least a month since I last used it), I get the following error when opening VS 9:

"Ulead VideoStudio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I can get to the wizard screen when starting VS, but going any further gets the above message. When I click the “click here” link in the message, a second error message appears.

I’m familiar with VS having used versions 7,8 and 9, and this is the first time I’ve had any trouble with it.

I have the disk version and have tried
- repair installation
- complete uninstall (Add/Remove Programs from Control Panel and instructions on this forum for manually cleaning various VS and Soundman Folders and removing Windows Installer 3.1)
- complete reinstall, all with no luck.

My setup is:
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build
2600) with the latest updates
2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
2GB PC3200 memory
No recent hardware changes

Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

Rob,

Not meaning to be redundant, but when you performed your uninstall/reinstall was this the procedure you followed?

1) Clean up C:\Windows\temp directory. Clean up all files in C:\Documents and
Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Temp folder. Uninstall VideoStudio 9 from
control panel Add/Remove programs.
Delete following folders
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead
VideoStudio
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc
=>C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\

Proceed to step 2, even if you can't complete step 1.

2) Delete folder {88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE} in
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (Please set "Show hidden
files and folders." in folder option in OS)

3) Please del the folder " Ulead VideoStudio 9.0" folder in C:\program
files\ulead system
4) Run Regedit from Start/Run in Windows task bar
5) Delete folder {88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE} in
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
(If you always see Ulead VideoStudio 9 file name showed in the Add/Remove
Program, please do point 5)

To the best of my knowledge this is as close as it gets to a "clean" install and it worked well for me when I had similar problems. If that doesn't do the trick you'd almost have to assume system issues of some sort. Are you able to recall which (if any) applications you've installed between your last successful launch of VS9 and now?

Mike,

That's the procedure I followed.

I install/uninstall a fair amount of software and utilities, so I can't really tell what I've put on my machine that could be causing the issue.

I'll install it on another computer and see what happens for me.

I can reinstall windows as I have my data on a separate partition, though I'll end up back at square 1 with my applications. I have images of my setup, but they're recent and likely wouldn't help with whatever is causing this issue.

Thanks for quick reply.

Anything in your Windows XP error log that might point to the cause?

Have you tried doing a "system restore" going back to a date when all was well in ULEAD land???? just a thought !

good luck

Appreciate the ideas. I looked through the error log, and only saw references to my application error for VS... there was no helpful amplifying information that I could decipher.

I tried doing a system restore to the earliest date I could (two weeks ago), but the system couldn't be restored.

I'm guessing that I need to reinstall XP and start from scratch. Not too big a deal, just an investment of time. I back up my system and data partitions nightly, so I won't lose any data. I'll transfer my mail, favorites and settings to a backup partition. The pain will be in reinstalling all my applications, though I'm sure I won't be putting all the stuff I have back on my C: drive.

I'll let you know how it works out.

Have you recently upgraded or changed the ATI video Catalyst drivers?
If you haven't then maybe installing the latest catalyst drivers along with
the proper MMC files and re-install the latest DirectX drivers could help.

I've had problems using ati cards with ulead products. Once I find a set
that works I stay with them.

it seems to me that this problem is happening alot more than it used to, I was bitten by this "bug" about a month ago. I opened a new windows user account and it worked fine. I later discovered that having AIM ( AOL Instant Messenger) was the problem, because once I removed it, the program loaded fine, since you say you install alot of software, perhaps you have this piece of software installed, if so, try removing it and see where that takes you.

I updated my video card drivers, but still can't get into VS.

I'm gathering all my drivers and favorite programs in the event I do a re-install of Windows, but I'll try getting rid of some of my unused programs that have been added in the past few months (mostly utilities-type programs and stuff I've found in PC World/PC Magazine). I need to do a program cleanup anyway.

One more suggestion, do you have Microsoft Windows Installer 3.x installed?

I found that I have to keep it uninstalled for UVS9 to work (only crashes on Video Capture for me).

I only install it when I need to add some MS patch. Then I uninstall it again. But one day, I expect one of MS patch will crash UVS.

Just a quick update... took advantage of the long weekend to reinstall Windows, and I'm now able to get into both VideoStudio and MovieFactory.

I'm working a MovieFactory project, and will post back if I have any further difficulty.

Thanks for all the tips and advice.

Thanks for that Philip -- most interesting. :shock: We have had quite a number of people here who have experienced difficulties using Lame MP3, though, as far as I can recall, the problem was in trying to insert music ripped with Lame MP3 into the timeline, or with getting it to play back. This is the first report of where it might have actually interfered with the operation of the program as a whole. Let us know if you have any repeat of the freeze but without the codec.
