no sound recording from vhs

Hi folks. trying to put together my sons wedding video and one of the guests has given me a vhs tape of his contribution from his video8 camera of the happy day. I've copied it over to the PC via video studio 8. although I got sound during the capture sequence I have no sound on the captured files. I copied it over on avi format. what have I done wrong?

How did you copy analog video to your PC in AVI format? Which DV type? 1 or 2? Type 2 has a separate sound stream.
