MPEG file cut short when importing into Create disc

Post by Gideon »

Hi,
I'm using VS9 boxed, upgraded from VS8 boxed. PC is a Dell Optiplex, 2.8 GHz, 1Gig RAM, second 250Gig H/D. There's been no problems with VS on this PC until now....(although to be honest I'm not sure if this :? is a VS problem..) :?
I have checked & confirmed the PC settings as per the manual and follow the procedures & settings to create a DVD as recommended by the posting at the beginning of this forum.

After a project (20 minutes) was completed I created a NTSC MPEG video file. Then selected 'New Project', 'Share' and 'Create Disc'. Selected 'Add Video' and the Open Video File dialog displayed. I selected the MPEG file just created. In the preview window at the bottom the file played (video seen) but only for a minute or so. Exactly the same length played when the file was imported into the Create Disc dialog, either when adding chapters or two steps later when the titles and chapters can be reviewed. Other MPEG files also only play for a short time, their duration seemingly to be related the the length of the original (video) file.

Interestingly in the Add/Edit chapter dialog, if 'Auto Chapters' is used with, say 3 minutes between chapters the whole video 'capture' is shown during this process as normal. The resulting thumbnails are displayed. Selecting one does not show it on the Add/Edit chapters display. Press play and the display remains blank although the jog pointer moves. The adjacent timecode also counts but is too fast: the (first) left hand digit looks like minutes, the next two digits seconds, the next two fractions of seconds and the smaller final two fractions of those.

Importing a VS project file into 'Create Disc' and everything functions correctly, including the timecode display.

The PC is up-to-date from Windows Update.

Can anyone suggest why the MPEG files are being cut short? They play OK when viewed in WMP or NeroVision.

Thanks & best regards

Hi Dave

Are you sure you started a NEW project, and that the project was empty when you selected Share.?

Do this.

Start a New project
Import Your mpeg video file to the timeline.
Does this file play ok from beginning to end?

Right click the video file and select properties, What are they???

Delete the video clip (no clips in the timeline)
Share Create Disc—add video

Dave,
You may have inadvertently selected a short region of your project when you created the video file. Open the project again and see if there is a red line above the timeline display. If so, the red line marks out a section of the project to render into a video file.

Hi Trevor, John,
Many thanks for your replies.

Trevor, I did what you suggested and imported a previously 'burned' MPEG file into a clean timeline. Therefore this is one long clip. Just below the screen, if 'project' is selected the file will play to the end. But if 'clip' is selected, the file plays only for a short time - the playback stops at exactly the same point as when I import it into 'create disc'. Strange.

The video properties are:
File format: NTSC DVD
MPEG-2 video, lower field first
Attributes: 24 bits, 720x480, 4:3
Frame rate: 29.97 fps
Variable bit rate, max 8000 kbps (6000 shows the same problem)
Audio: MPEG audio layer, 2 files
Attributes: 48000Hz, 16bit, stereo
Layer: 2
Bit rate: 224 kbps

I think we're on the right track in that it's sometime to do with the (project) settings. John, there was no red line - I have been caught out by that before, though.
I have VS8 on another PC and that works perfectly. I've been comparing settings but as yet I can't see what I may have inadvertantly changed. :?

I have the feeling it's something obvious so please mention the obvious things, then I can kick myself and be

If you need more info please let me know.

Thank you for your help and time.

Best regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

To the left of the timeline are three buttons, the top is the ‘Story board view’ with this selected the clips in the timeline are viewed as a single file. (a square box)
The middle button is the ‘Timeline view’ and shows the video as a continuous film.

With your Mpeg in the timeline.
Select the top button, the storyboard view, How many boxes contain a video clip?

(You asked for the obvious question)

Now right click and select properties, what is the file size and duration of the clip.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks again for your reply and thoughts.

I did what you suggested and the clip length & time shown was the same as the length of the whole video, i.e. just the one clip.

But the clip playback stilll abruptly stopped after about a minute, at the usual point.

So, I decided on a re-install. Windows add/remove programs VS9. The repair option.

That fixed it.

Still don't know what caused it though!

The disc has been finished and is on its way to Manchester.

Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers,
Dave
