Can't insert thumbnail from Effect Gallery/Photographic

Post by rhianna »

Hi,

I am using PhotoImpact XL SE 8.5.
I am frustrated because when I open up a new image I can not insert a photographic thumbnail from the "Effect Gallery/Photographic."
I have tried to create a new image using each of these:
  • White Canvas
  • Transparent Canvas
  • Custom Color

No matter which one I begin with, I keep getting an annoying message, "Unable to apply the selected thumbnail's properties to the image."

At the top of the New Image Dialog box are buttons which correspond to Data Type, would the selection of one of those buttons determine whether or not I could insert a thumbnail picture into my new image?

I'd like to create logos, banners, and buttons and I would like to insert either small thumnails or portions of a photo. I haven't been successful yet.

Is there anyone who could help me with my problem?

Thanks[/list]

Which of the data types is selected when you open your new image? Can you give us a screenshot of the dialog box for the new image?

I had trouble with the screenshot.
The only way I know how to create a screen shot is CTRL + Print Screen
and then to paste that into a Word document. This process created a 9.32 MB .shs file and the host I tried to FTP it to rejected it.

Do you have a better method for me to create a screenshot of the dialog box and make it visible to you on the web?

The data types from left to right would be:
a) 10,325 Bytes
b) 81,900 Bytes
C) says a number 16
d) " " 256
e)240 KB

would one of those data types affect my new image so that I could not incorporate a photographic thumbnail?

Thank you for your quick response. If you suggest a way for me to capture my screen & send it to the Internet, I'll do it. My method was not accepted :?

Been there, done that Rhianna,

it's really very simple, once you are pointed in the right direction. Ctrl+PrtSc copies the active window, PrtSc copies the whole screen.

Once you have done that, because PI is open then already, click Edit on the menu bar and Paste as a new Image, voila. Now you can crop it to just the portion you want, optimize it for web use and upload it.

That's all.

To come back to your problem though, for a moment I thought, maybe she's chosen the wrong data format. However, I tried it and the photo thumbnails can all be dragged into (or double clicked) a new image, regardless of the settings. I used PI 10 though for the trial. I have a copy of PI XL on my machine at home and give it a go there too.

I fear though, there is something else causing this.

Just uploaded what my dialog box looks like http://www.heinz-oz.id.au/new-image.jpg. If you select the same settings, although mine worked with any, it should work. If not, well we have to look elsewhere. Did it ever work in the past?

This is what I captured:

I bought this software through a special deal with 1 & 1 hosting company.
I downloaded it and never used it much. I think by chance I opened it tonight and started to play around with it. I didn't really use it in the past. I would like it to work to the extent that my version is supposed to.

Thank you for your prompt help.

Well, I reproduced your settings and get the same result. Any other setting than transparent background works though.

Try again with a non transparent background, it should work.

It's almost 2 in the morning where I am, I better get some sleep.
I'll try again when I am refreshed. Thank you for all of your help.

I think I tried the non-transparent backgrounds ... but I'll try again.

Thanks

Hi Rhianna, Hi Heinz,

Rhianna, if you haven't managed to solve your problem yet, can you please say what steps you are taking to "insert" a photographic thumbnail?

After you create a new RGB canvas, with a white or any non-transparent background, what exactly do you do next?

From reading your description, I kind of have a feeling I'm missing a step here.

Thanks

I'd like to thank heinz-oz and JenT.
I managed to insert one of my photos into a "new image with background color."

One of my reasons for confusion is the "Effect Gallery/Photographic"
"Beautify Skin" would be a way for me to touch up one of my photos, right?
I was trying to insert the picture of the young woman with the red lips or the bride within the "Effect Gallery/Photographic" and I couldn't place those photos in a new image.

The young woman with the red lips, "Beautify Skin" I guess can change the appearance of whether a picture shows someone [from one of my photos] with an ivory complexion to a beige, right? What is "the bride's" effect?

Thank you very much for your help. This is a great forum :)

Yep, that would explain the problem and a sign that we weren't reading your explanation very well. :)

"Effects/Photographic" thumbnails in the Easy Palette do not represent a FILL, in otherwords, they won't fill the base image with the photo you see as the thumbnail, but an Effect represented by the thumbnail. So if there isn't an image to apply the Effect to, you won't readily see it.

All the Effects in the Easy Palette have titles under them. If you can't see the full title of the Effect, make your thumbnails bigger. (Also helps to see what Effect is being applied.) But even though there's a bride pictured in the EP, I haven't found "the Bride's Effect' yet. ;) (Spot Filter? Zoom Blur?)
