calibration error/DVD
Does DVD Shrink/Decrypter interfer with VS9 dvd burning? I have had
no problems burning dvds with VS9 until after I installed DVD Shrink and
Decrypter. "Power calibration" error pops up during burning phase
and stops midway. I am using the same Memorex DVD media as
before. I switch to Philips DVD media, but gave me the same problem.
So is it the media that is creating this power calibration error? If so,
which brands of DVD media works best with VS9? If it is DVD Shrink,
do I need to uninstall it everytime I burn with VS9 or is there someway
to just disable DVD Shrink like anti-virus protection?

Nope, those two programs do not install any drivers or keep any code resident when the applications aren't running.
There are a number of problems that can cause power calibration errors, usually it is bad media. A software bug, weak PSU, failing drive can also cause this.
There is no "best brand" of media for Videostudio, you'll have to match the media to the drive. However, I would generally stay away from bargain bin / clearance table media. The VideoHelp site has alot of information about drives and what media does/does not work in them, and CD Freaks is also a good resource.

power calibration error
Since I wasn't able to burn using VS9, I transferred video files to
Sonic MyDVD and was able to successfully burn using the same
media. When I use VS9, a "power calibration failed 0x80041459"
error appears. I'm using the same drive, same media, but
VS9 fails to burn and Sonic works. I follow the rules posted on top of these threads. I would like to burn using VS9 since I like the dvd menu templates better. Can't figure whySonic will burn but not VS9.

I'm not familiar with Sonic MyDVD, but if it includes a Packet Writing / Drive Letter Access component along the lines of Nero InCD or Roxio Drag-To-Disc, then that may be the cause of the problem. Such programs typically immediately take exclusive control of the drive and media when a writeable disk is inserted, and prevent other software from burning.

Hi
Calibration errors are not software related. When a drive first starts to write to a disk it will burn a small amount of data to a calibration area on
the disc, using the calibration information in the Media ID code, and
then try to read back the data that it has written. If it cannot be
read, then disk will be ejected and fail with a power calibration error.
A power calibration error is normally caused by either bad media or a dirty lens on the drive itself. You can either try a different brand of media or you can try to use a can of compressed air to clean the dirty lens on the drive.
I had an old 4X dvd drive that reported a power calibration error. At first it only did it occasionally but eventually it did it almost every time. I ended up getting a new 16x drive and the problem went away.

And for the record, MyDVD does not cause any conflicts with VS. I have used it a lot in the past (though no longer do) with VS loaded, and no problems. HOwever, your mention of Roxio raises the question of whether you have the Roxio packet-writing software installed, similar to Nero InCD. I can never remember exactly what the Roxio software is called, but Torsten knows and advises that it can be disabled without uninstalling, unlike InCD, which needs to be totally uninstalled.

It was the media!
Thanks for all the help - went and bought new media and
had a successful burn. I guess some of the discs in the
Memorex spindle were bad media.

It must be a coincidence then...cause I too have been using DVD Shrink for ages without any problems. Out of around 300 burns I've only had 3 fail...then last night...all of a suddne I created 3 coasters...not impressed. I have had VideoStudio for a couple of weeks now, so naturally I suspect that it has something to do with it. I am using the same brand disk I have always used...and it wasn't a new pack either...so the chances of a bad batch are not likely... The burn with DVD shrink would get upto around 50% and then fail...???
In any case, if you are experiencing burning problems, it's a good idea to create DVD folders or an ISO file in the "Share>>Create Disk" step if you're not already doing so. That way you will be free to experiment with any number of burning programs to track down the problem.
