Capture Video - A newbie question I'm afraid !!!!

Post by ely »

I have Videostudio 9 and I am trying to capture Home Video to my PC to edit and create home movies.

I have a Sony DV Cam and I am in the UK (PAL).

Could someone please let me know what the best settings are to capture my source video to maximise the quality and make editing as easy as possible.

I have recently tried the following:-
Sony MSDV
Split By Scene
DV Type 1
PAL 25
Micro AVI
24 bits 720x576 25fps
Field Order A
DV Video Encode Type 1
DV Audio PAL 44.10khz 16bit

I would like to know if these are indeed the best settings or what people would suggest as better and why?

Thanks in advance for your help
Ely

Capturing in DV format (either Type 1 or Type 2) and then transcoding to MPEG2 format aftewards when you create the video file to be placed on the DVD is indeed the best way.

I was a little disturbed by the reference in your properties list to Micro AVI. I assume that was a typo for 'Microsoft AVI' rather than a reference to Micro MV which is a different type of camera/cassette made by Sony that requires its own plug-in (which moreover never seems to work for those with that camera...)

Otherwise, like Torsten, your properties seem fine.

Hi
I assume you are connecting your camera via a Firewire connection. That is also good.
The footage in this case is copied to your pc, no re-coding is required. The properties you see are created within your camera during recording.

For future recordings.
The only change I would make is the audio, to DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
This is part of your camera’s audio setup and will only effects new recordings.

Thanks for your replies.

I am indeed connecting via Firewire and I was talking about Microsoft AVI.

I have one additional question.

Trevor implies that settings on my video camera affect the process. Should I be doing something specific with the Video Camera to get settings correct for the whole process.

Hi
It was merely an observation that you are using 12 bit audio.
I have always used 16 bit which as far as I know is standard for dvd.

Jerry Jones tutorial’s recommended changing your settings provided your camera supported 16 bit.

Quote:-
PLEASE NOTE: If you're using a MiniDV, DVCAM, or Digital 8 camcorder, I highly recommend that you adjust the camcorder - if possible - to record in 16-bit audio mode and not 12-bit audio mode.

The tutorials are very good but be aware that the settings are for NTSC and not PAL
Well worth a read.
