Some, but not all operations in MSP8 profit from it, such as rendering, but don't expect 2 x the speed. This applies to dual processors, dual core and HT, However, this is also OS-dependent. For example, XP Home will allow for only one HT processor whereas XP Pro will allow up to 4 processors or 2 dual cores or 2 HTs. It will also depend on the BIOS. I am unable to say what the 64 bit XP will allow.

Note that HT is not the same as dual-core. From experience, rendering with HT allows for a speed increase in rendering of typically only 5-15%, which is why I call it HYPErthreading. I've no experience in true dualies, so cannot pronounce on it.

Thanks for the reply. Well I've been informed that my new computer has been shipped, and is now on it's way :) after I have done some testing on MSP8 I will let you know how it does using the dual processor.

so how is it with the dual core? I just picked up a dual core last weekend but currently don't have any video projects to work on until mid december. Anyone have info?

Dual core/dual CPU's are an advantage when the program module and the OS support them, but the advantage is not 2x. It never is with dualies.

For best results WinXP Pro SP2 is in order (XP Home or Pro support AMD 64 dualies or dual core). Win2K's dualie support was patchy.

You should also read this M$ Knowledge Base article;

and for those considering Athlon64 X2's this AMD page;

BTW: most reviewers are reporting that the AMD 64 X2's are faster than the Intel's, and a real barnburner for <$300 street is the Opteron 165 (massively overclockable, 1mb cache/core etc.);
