I have to tell you that Charlie Hills has been very supportive in trying to solve this problem. I got responses almost immediately to each one of my emails to him.
I can read the pdf book and thought it was just what I needed to help make my videos more interesting and alive. I can open all the files - except for the .vsp ones. I feel there is a bug in my version of video studo 9 and am contemplating buying the boxed version and starting all over again with it. However, apart from this problem and one with smartsound the VS9 I have does everything else really well, and as I said before if I uninstall/reinstall I could be just swapping one set of problems for another lot after reading the problems other people have with VS9 on the forum pages.
Peter when you relink: You store your zipped file in one location and unzip to another? which is where you open your .vsp file from. How can relinking take place from the same location? VS9 says file missing (path g:\ ) do you wish to relink, I say yes. but then I nagvigate to the same location again to open it. On trying to relink a message appears "file mismatch".
When I have other projects and the relink message appears it is because I have moved a file so relinking takes place easily.
Sorry if I am not making myself clear, not as technically minded (yet) as most of you appear to be.
Once again my thanks to Mr Hills for his support.

Not sure I fully understand your re-link sequence here Winifred
I unzip my getting results files so that the book is in c:\grp-vs9. The projects directory is under that point i.e. the exercises and shuttle directory is then c:\grp-vs9\projects\exercises and c:\grp-vs9\projects\shuttle respectively. When I open the "camera-flash" project file (c:\grp-vs9\projects\exercises) VS9 tells me it can't file "g:\projects\shuttle\0005.mpg" and offers the Relink button option. Pressing the Relink button I then use the browser to find and navigate to c:\grp-vs9\projects\shuttle\0005.mpg and select that file in the browser (the file name appears in the "File Name" section of the browser - right beside the "Open" button) - click Open (you should also be able to preview it through the play button down the bottom of the browser screen). If you get this far then I really can't see any reason for VS9 NOT to be able to relink to the file??? Do you get another error message at this point? What exactly does VS9 do at this point? (if anything).
Does this describe what you do and see Winifred?
BTW, Winifred, email me your camera-flash.vsp file (my email address is here on the ULead web board) and I'll do a binary comparison of your file with mine. It's Friday here in Sydney and I leave for home at 3:00pm (I work 6:00am to 3:00pm to beat peak-hour traffic), so you might not get me before Monday my time
I certainly wouldn't recommend buying the boxed version of VS9 as yet - you have download links, if you can't get a "good" version of VS9 by using those links then the boxed version will make little difference - assuming VS9 is corrupted somehow and repeated downloads of the ESD don't change things then I would have to start looking at something else in your computer system - which might require you to re-image your hard drive and reload your applications - of course this is a last resort - but certainly one I would use before buying the boxed version! Many people here have purchased the ESD version (myself included) and have not had the problems you are experiencing so there are arguments there is something possibly wrong on your computer rather than something wrong with VS9.

Message for Peter
Yes, your message describes exactly the procedure I do, at the point of VS9 not being able to relink the file, I get a message to say VS9 cannot read the file.
I have sent the "camera-flash" file for you to look at, if you click on the properties box for this file, you will see a message at the bottom regarding "unblocking" - did you get this when you first opened your file. If you tick the "unblock" box, the properties box returns to looking normal.
Only one thing I do not understand, is that when we relink the file we are navigating to the same location - how can relinking take place? viz:
For example normally when I have to relink, say I have an image in a file called c:\mypictures\Molly and decide to move it to c:\mypictures\Birthday. Then when I open my project in VS9 say called Molly's Party and VS9 comes up with a message that c:\mypictures\molly is missing – relink. I then navigate to c:\mypictures\Birthday. I have navigated to a completely different location and relinking takes place.
Thank you very much for helping me out.

Just to wrap up this thread, everything got worked out today. If Win wants to reply, I'll leave it up to her.
But at the very least I thought everyone involved should know there wasn't a bug with her system, vs9 or my book. I only mention it because I'd rather not leave the thread open for future readers to get scared off!

Sincere apologies to both Peter Miliken and Charlie Hills
My problem was that I was failing to relink correctly. When I tried to open a project file, of course it asks for the first file it needs in the project, which I was not relinking to, I was trying to relink to the actual file I had opened, not noticing it was asking for a different file, say in Checkpointstep2, I think the first file names is 007.mpg. I was trying to relink to Checkpointstep2. How stupid is that.
If I had read your posts properly, I would have resolved it much quicker -it took a while for the "penny to drop".
Also my smartsound files are now working, so I am up and running with the book.
Thank you both once again, and to everyone else who tried to help. I will go and sit in the corner now, curl up and die with shame.
Wyn
