Weird results with audio mixing panel in MSP8

Post by Joe Linn »

I have put together a number of video clips with audio on track 1. I put music on audio track 2. I want to slightly increase the volume of the entire music track and lower the volume of the audio in track 1 (the audio that matches the video) significantly. I did a select all so all the clips on both tracks were selected. I brought up the audio mixer panel. I clicked the auto write button on both tracks 1 and 2. I slid the sliders to the settings I wanted. I played the entire video in the audio mixer panel. I left the sliders where I set them the entire time the video was playing. I clicked the apply button on the audio mixer panel. The music track got modified correctly. Audio track 1, which is comprised of a number of individual clips, started at the value I set and returned to normal at the end of the first clip and stayed there for the rest of the video.

I tried undoing and retrying a couple times and ended up with even stranger results where the volume bounces between normal and the adjusted levels at various points during the clips. I closed the project without saving, started over again, and got the initial result where the first clip begins with the adjusted level then returns to normal at the end of the first clip and for the rest of the video. I want the audio on track 1 to play at the lower level during all of the clips.

Am I doing something wrong? Did I misunderstand how the audio mixer panel is supposed to work?

Thanks!

As you are applying it uniformly, would it not be easier to apply an audio filter??? The audio mixer is really meant for varying the audio within an individual clip, varying the settings as it is playing (and it sometimes gives funny results). Alternatively, you can alter the volume by "handles" on the line in the middle of the audio track. If you press shift as you drag them up or down, you can see the level for fine adjustment.

There are many clips in the track. I'm trying to reduce the volume of them all. If I use an audio filter, is there a way to apply it to all the clips? When I group the clips, it won't let me add an audio filter. The volume leveling filter only allows a maximum reduction of -12dB. I was trying to do more like -25. Is there a different filter I should be using?

If I adjust the handles, does that require adjusting the beginning and end of each clip individually?

What is the best way to reduce the volume of many clips in one track by a constant amount? I was just using the mixer because the documentation sounded like I should be able to do the whole track at once with it. I'll use whatever is the best way to adjust the whole track.

Thanks!

1. I wasn't thinking of volume level, but the Amplify filter, which can reduce by about 40 dB, I think.

2. Yes, it's possible to apply a filter to all clips on a track. Firstly, apply the filter to the first clip, right-click, Copy, select all clips, right-click, Paste attributes, Audio filter, OK.

I think you will find that is the most precise method.

I get those same funy results ... The "no help help desk" does not have a good answer for this so I used auto write on on one track at a time.

I listened at the levels I wanted my track at for a few seconnds then wrote them individually... this sucked but it worked.
