Problem with MPEG 2 editing- Videostudio 8SE

Post by notanotherforum »

I have VideoStudio 8SE and have a few MPEG files (optimal setting) captured from TV via a Leadtek TV tuner. I would like to do some very simple edits - just crop out unwanted scenes.

These files are fine in their unedited state but I am having problems with my finished edits, which are saved back to my hard drive (as edited MPEG video files opening with Media Player). They do not play correctly, as they start normally but then the image temporarily freezes even though the clock is still running. The video stops and starts in this way.

What's going wrong? I am doing the following:

1) While in the edit screen, open the relevent Media player file from hard drive and drag it down to the Storeyboard View (nice and simple!).

2) Click on 'Multi-trim Video' and then, in the new window, delete my unwanted video. Click 'OK'.

3) Click 'Save Trimmed Video'.

If someone can help, I'd be grateful. :?

Perhaps Videostudio is no good for MPEG editing? Strange that Leadtek bundled Videostudio with their TV tuner, then :( (MPEG is the principle format for capturing TV with the tuner. AVI is also possible but too big, I think, for transferring TV programmes to DVD)

Why are you 'saving' (rendering?) the edited files to .WMP format, rather than leaving them in their captured mpeg-2 format (for burning to DVD?)

I have the Leadtek DV2000 card and always capture to mpeg-2, which I then happily edit with no problems. The only quirk with the card which I have noticed is that it captures from analogue sources Lower Field First rather than Upper, which is the norm with most other analogue capture devices. But it works just fine...

Thanks.

Forget about the 'saving' part, as all this does is save the whole project as as a Ulead Videostudio 8 document. No- the .WMP file that I'm burning to DVD automatically saves to my 'WinFast Work Area' folder as soon as the encoding has finished (after pressing Save Trimmed Video). It is this file that I'm burning (and is faulty).

Hope I'm making sense- difficult to communicate via the internet!

Incidentally, when the tuner first captures TV to my hard drive ('WinFast Work Area' folder) it automatically uses the .WMP format.

Have you tried to change the capture format? Click on the configuration button on the card's control panel and you can choose between a variety of formats. Pick DVD or mpeg-2... The AVI format is attractive, but it is the full, uncompressed AVI not DV/AVI, and so will take 65 GB per hour!!!

Good day :D

With my TV tuner, you can choose from a list of capture formats to capture with. I chose to do so in MPEG-2 optimal. Once it is captured to my hard drive it has the .WMP logo and if I click on the properties of the file it says:

File Type: Movie file (MPEG)
Opens with: Windows Media Player.

I do not have enough space for AVI, as I have to transfer numerous TV programmes to DVD.

Ah -- then in fact it is not a WMP file at all, but really an mpeg and Windows Media Player is merely the program designated to play it.

But sorry -- can't think of any other suggestions for the moment... As I say, I have an almost identical card, and the captures and edits work fine...

I have always had problems with playing back edited MPEG files in Windows media Player even with files edited with a specialist MPEG Editor (Womble) If you have DVD Player software such as PowerDVD try playing it with that, you will probably find it plays back OK.

It appears to be a fault with Windows Media Player and not your MPEG file.

Having said this, bear in mind the dangers of editing MPEG files and possible/probable out of synch issues.

OK. Cool. I've got a spare copy of Roxio DVDMax2, so I could try using that. I wonder if Realplayer would be ok, too.

Re: the out of synch issues- Would you say that MPEG editing is inadvisable? It seems to me that MPEG strikes the best balance between size and quality- not sure what other format one could sensibly use for regular editing and transferring of TV programmes to DVD.

Ken.(following on from what SJJ said), are you opening your mpeg edits in .WMP? Please say no! :D :?

No -- I use PowerDVD or Nero Show Time. WMP had too many problems, so I tend to use that only for my music...
