Hi,
I am a newcomer. I have installed VideoStudio 9 on my new acquired windows media center computer. The grafic card is an ATIradeon x700pro.
To my surprise, the own created AVI Scenes , imported via my movie camera cannot be seen in videostudio, only the audio is to hear. The clips can only be seen frame by frame, that's all.
When I run the MS media software, the clips run in normal mode.
I made a crosscheck with my xp home PC, there the video studio 9 clips run perfect in videostudio 9.
1. Are there known problems with Microsft MCE 2005 and videostudio 9?
2. Do I need to load a different decoder/Codec?
3. Although my grafic card is MCE compatible, do I perhaps need a driver/decoder/codec?
I could not find similar problems with the search function. I would be happy if somebody could help me.
Regards

Can I ask exactly how you produced your 'own created AVI Scenes ' and exactly what their properties are (in VS9, right click on one of them and write down the properties). Without knowing more, I suspect that you may have created an mpeg-4 file which is wrapped in an AVI distribution format. If so, VS 9 does not handle mpeg-4 by itself. You have to go to the Ulead site and download the free mpeg-4 plug-in, but to do so you have to be a registered user of VS9.

Dear Ken,
I have imported via firewire a film from my digital movie camera (tried both Sony and JVC) into my VideoStudio 9 installed on my Microsoft MCE 2005 PC.
Videostudio has captured the film as AVI files, cut in scenes.
Following your advise, the properties show clearly: DV Video Encoder Type 1, 24 bits, 720x576, 4:3, Audio: DV-Audio PAL.
With the program DV converter from Ulead, I converted as a check some AVI Type 1 files into AVI type 2 (remember this is only to cut the audio from the video) clearly identified as DV-Video Encoder Type 2. Furthermore, I have checked again all this with the programs GSPOT and AVICodec. All files are identified as AVI files by those programs (no divx or MPEG-4 in it).
For all files, the video cannot be seen on the Microsoft MCE 2005 PC, excepct picture by picture moving manually forward. The sound is no problem.
There must either be a problem with the Ulead Video Studio 9 or the Microsoft MCE 2005 operating system. Or do I need to install additional drivers, but where and which ones?
I have addressed this problem to the hotline of my computer manufacturer and they advised me to contact Ulead.
Funny enough, with the MS media program I am able to see all AVI files, but that is no help, since I need to have a program to cut my films. On my normal XP Home PC there is also no problem to see and hear the AVI files.
My question is, does nobody else have similar problems with the Microsoft MCE (media center edition 2005).
Regards

Hi odly,
I also have a similar configuration as you. MCE 2005 and a ATI Radeon x700pro. I have been experiencing the same issues as you. My video was captured from my Sony DVD camcorder. I also could only hear the sound and get no video playback from editor.
I did find a temporary work around for this. I have two LCD monitors hooked up to my system, my primary monitor using my video cards DVI output and my second monitor using the VGA output from my video card. The video card is setup to extend my desktop across to the second monitor.
If I attempt to use VideoStudio on my primary monitor, I experience the problem where I only get sound and no video playback. If I move the application to my secondary monitor the playback is fine.
I have tried disabling my secondary monitor, but VS still does not work on my primary monitor. I have not experienced any other problems with video playback from any other application using either monitor. I am not sure if the problem stems from VS, MCE 2005 or my video card. If you’re lucky enough to have access to a second monitor, may I suggest you hook it up to your machine and test VS to see if it will play back correctly on the second monitor.
Please let me know if you have any success getting the application to run. My suggestion is only a temporary fix because it still wont work with a single monitor (at least on my system) so I would still be interested in finding a solution.

Hi glukow,
meanwhile I have done another test.
On advice of the MCE 2005 forum, I installed for test purposes 2 competitor programs on my MCE 2005 PC (a very expensive one and the other a more general one for home users like me).
Both programs are able to read and play back even the files produced by Ulead without any problem. One of the programs accepts only type 2 files.
Since Ulead VS 9 is working perfect on my XP home PC, I will continue to use the product on this computer.
For me it is clear, there is problem with VS 9 or, alternatively, the MCE 2005 version of Microsoft has a lack of a certain plug-in, needed by VS9.
Infact, if the MCE 2005 is not compatible with the VS9, then Ulead should communicate what peace of software I should acquire to make it running.
I have not 2 monitors to check your configuration.

On my systems this occurs because of the ATI video drivers.
Also a bad combination of "Catalyst" and Multimedia Drivers installed.
You must have the latest DirectX drivers to match ATI latest drivers.
In VS under "Preferences" F6 change to "Preview Only" and not dual head.
Check your ATI installation and in the advanced screens for "Overlay"
experiment with those settings. Also having "Hydrovision" active affects this.
On my systems it's the combination between having 2 screens and the
overlay feature along with hydrovision active at the sametime.
If you are using 2 screens disable the 2nd monitor and see if the same
occurs on the primary monitor using VS (also disconnect any connected Tv's).
If VS then works the problem is usually in the "Overlay" features of the
ATI drivers when using dual-head.

Hi etech6355,
this is very interesting.
Unfortenuately I do not have 2 screens to check the configuration.
The graphic card I own seems to be compatible with MCE. I got my PC only last month, so I will check what drivers are installed.
But I cannot explain the fact, why other programs run without problems and why VS runs perfectly on my xp home.
Is there no offical statement from Ulead concerning MCE 2005?
