Can't create double layer dvd but my mpg file is only 7 gig

I've looked everywhere to see if anybody else have a problem similiar to mine but I didn't see any so I'm posting this question so hopefully a more advance user can help.

My project is over 2 hours long and I want to encode at the best possible bitrate. Now if I go straight to Create Disk, at a variable bitrate of 8000, it will be over the double layer limit of 8.5 gig. So I first encode it at a variable bitrate of 8000 and now my MPG file is only 7 gig and DVD compliant. This should fit into a double layer dvd no problem right?

But now when I try to Create Disk with this file, it complains that it is over the limit and won't create the disk. If I set the bitrate lower, it will re-encode which is something I don't want. If I set it to match the variable 8000 bitrate mpg file and click on "Do not encode mpg compliant...", the timeline go over the double layer limit and won't let me create the disk.

Note my procedure works great for a single layer disk. If a project is a little bit over the 4.3 gig, I know that encoding it at a variable rate will shink it a bit and will fit into a 4.3 gig dvd. It will pop up a message saying that this won't fit a single layer disk but will fit a double layer. BUT it will encode and when it is done, it will fit. But for a double layer, if it's over the limit, you can't do anything.

Can anybody figure out a way to resolve this issue? I'm using VS9.

Hi

Click Share > Create Disk and then press F6 to go into preferences. Make sure that the disk size field is set to DVD-8.5GB.

Yes. It is at 8.5 dual layer. The problem is that it took the duration of my MPG file and my variable bitrate 8000 setting and determine that is is over 7.9 gig and give me an error message that is is "over the limit".

If you do it for a single layer, that is with a project size just over 4.3 gig, you get a warning message but still allow you to Create Disk.
