Upgrade from 5.0 to 9.0 ?

Post by Sterling »

:?: I just installed a FireWire card that came bundled with Video Studio DV 5.0 with registration serial number. I wanted to find out what I've got to work with here before installation, so I followed the links on the ULead website, going through the page that informs me this old product is not supported, to the page to link to FAQs that are supposed to still exist for old programs, only to find the links dead. Is this typical of the level of support I can expect from ULead? Is this version 5.0 program worth installing, if even only to get a $50 upgrade discount to version 9? Any users with personal hands-on experience want to weigh in on a comparison of version 9 with Pinnacle's Studio 10? My immediate interest, though, is whether I should bother to install this Video Studio DV 5.0 to get an idea of how I like ULead's approach to capture and edit.

I never used 5, but I do know that Dolby AC3 sound is new in VS9.

I'd suggest that you download the Trial Version of VS9 (or order the Trial CD) and take it for a spin. Don't forget to download the User Manual

I've never tried Pinnacle Studio... I thought you could downlad a demo version, but I couldn't find it on their website. :? You can get Pinnacle Studio with 5.1 channel AC3. (It might not be in all versions.) Video Studio only has stereo AC3.

Hi Sterling :)

I first started editing video with VS5, still have it, and don't use it... Went from VS5 to 8 and now 9. Next jump will probably be to MSP 8 (when I can muster up the $$$$..

As DVDDoug suggested download the trial version of 9 and see what you think...

However I've used an older version of Pinnicle Studio and I didn't care for it. There is one other product that I've been trying out, and if it had the UI (user interface) similar to Ulead's...well I think I'd have to jump ship...

Just out of interest to see what the competition was like I downloaded a trial of Pinnacle Studio 9.

One look at their interface was enough, I didn't bother with it again!!

Sjj1805,
Have you looked at Vegas Movie Studio 6:
Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6

It seems to be a good consumer video editor, lacks smartsound, mpeg4, and the UI isn't that friendly, but does give more flexibility with 4 video and audio tracks.

Thanks for that, just looked at their web page.
Looks sort of in between VS9 and MSP8 having 4 video/audio tracks.
What amazed me is the price. I shall download the trial when I get home.

I like to look at other products as I get some ideas for current/future projects usually from their tutorials, examples etc which I then reproduce with my Ulead products.
